The 36th Inf Div had several Medal of Honor Recipients as well. One of them I found out too late--didn't live very far from where I do. He passed away a week before I found out that he was living in San Antonio.
Oh and especially for your info--that division also sent a Sergeant whom I knew (now deceased) who served as one of Pres Roosevelts Honor Guard. His name is Greg Wiley--if anyone wants to look him up.
He passed away about 10 or so years ago--his widow still lives in Kingsville, Texas.

Carl, you should come up to Austin on a Wednesday - Sunday and visit the Camp Mabry museum. They have quite alot on the 36th division and in September they will have a bunch of reenactors giving shows. They also have gotton lots more tanks recently, I think there about 30 now. The price is right too, FREE ! You would be welcome to stay over night at my house. http://www.kwanah.com/txmilmus/about/exhibits.htm

Thanks for sharing the website TA152. That looks like a very interesting museum.

With the new thread being listed here, and continuing on -
while all you guys are just wishing to be on this front or that front, in this army, or that navy, I'd of hoped to have been assigned to a support unit assisting a WAC, WAVE, WASP, or Nursing unit providing the female troops with their bare necessesities!

Thanks TA--i'd like to at some point. In fact--just today my sister invited me to stay at the Condo we have in Bandera--just 30 mins drive from San Antonio. But--I had to pass as I have to replace the struts on my car and as it is--I could'nt take a chance on driving that far.
I might be able to do this later this year though.
Tanks? I love tanks

I would agree with Otto, I think though serving a career a little like Buzz Berling would be nice, start off at Malta and serve after in the Western Theater, but serve the whole war.
I would way rather be in Fighter Command then Bomber Command too, Bomber Command, which would most likely be 6 group as a Canadian, was a dealth trap.

Thanks TA--i'll be looking forward to that and I might be able to go for a visit sometime this winter. I hope they will allow pics to be taken as I will want to take a bunch. Also--when i;m in the area--I will get some good pics of The Alamo as well.
Oh and as of this posting--only 321 more to go before "breaking the bank,"

Still the same here.
Infantry officer in some German regular infantry division. Italy and the Eastern Front would be nice.
And I wouldn't mind being an Artillery officer either.

You are probably the only person I know who would have positive things to say about serving on the Ost Front my friend.

Of course it was not nice at all! We all know the Eastern Front was HELL ON EARTH and the most brutal confrontation ever. My point was that it was the best theatre for infantry fighting.
But if you see it that way then why should we want to serve in WWII? Risk our lives in a horrible conflict, even if it is in a ship, a submarine, a plane or tank?

Alright, I'll bite. Assuming that the clock is rolled back 60 or so years and that otherwise I am still the same person career and experiance-wise I would have certainly immediately been promoted to Lieutenant in the US Navy (as were many career Chief Petty Officers both active and reserve (me) on the outbreak of WW II in the US)and assigned as a division officer aboard a larger unit (most likely a cruiser) for 4 - 6 months and then promoted to Lieutenant Commander and Department Head in Engineering (my background).
If my ship wasn't sunk by the end of 1942 I would even survive the war. I would have ended the war promoted to Commander. After the war (as I would have started out with 24 years of experiance)I would have retired and resumed my civilian career.
Not glamorous but it's what I do well.

I would spend the war selling doughnuts to GI's in London...
or
in the assault regiment of the Fallschirmjager.
Not much difference between the two...

Well, if we we simply shifted my life back 60 years that would mean I would be commanding an anti-tank squad in the glorious and superbly equipped Swedish Army *cough* *cough*.
Pretty safe - no combat, and probably no anti-tank weapons either...
