| What If? Alternate History: Speculate about WWII battles that never were. Could the Axis have won? What if Hitler had the bomb? |

What could have happen if the west did react to this move by Hitler, what could have been the out come to Hitler if he lost, and could there had been war?

It would have put the Wehrmacht generals in a stronger bargaining position. Once the war started and Hitler won successes due to poor leadership on the western side, the generals had nothing to bargain with. An embarrassment such as the Rhineland fiasco would have put Hitler at a disadvantage if not overthrown.

a major disadvantage...possible surrendering? otherwise, the people would think poorly of him, and overthrow is a likely outcome...

By not doing anything it was like telling the world that Germany was treated wrong in the Versailles ( treaty ) and on this occasion the keys to settle the situation was given to the totally wrong person, Adolf Hitler.

It's amazing the number of times Hitler could have been stopped before the war. I am glad Winston Churchill saw what Hitler stood for?
Just a shame that more didn’t wake up.

I think I read that Hitler warned the troops that once they enter the Rhineland they should immediately pull back if the foreign troops ( French I suppose ) started pouring in.
Can anyone confirm this or do I recall it wrong?

They were greatly outnumbered at this time so had no chance at winning.
