| What If? Alternate History: Speculate about WWII battles that never were. Could the Axis have won? What if Hitler had the bomb? |

What if in 1942 the Germans instead of attacking Stalingrad attack Moscow in a 2nd thrust but this time involving more units then in 41 what would happen.?

Well, that was the attack direction the Soviets expected at the time so more troops concentrated in a defense in deep together with the bad terrain that would bring an interesting result.

Yes, actually I´m rather amazed that Stalin and STAVKA were not not aware of the real direction of the 1942 German offensive. However this might have saved these troops for the Stalingrad battle even though new tactics were used by the Red Army ( not leaving troops to be surrounded by Germans ) by then.

But were the Russians in any shape to hold back the Germans if they charged at Moscow again.?

I'm away from my books so I can't be specific about figures and deployments, but I'd wager so, as implied in my previous post.

I´d guess that the more important question is that is the Wehrmacht in shape for attacking?
Hitler was only able to attack in one Army group direction and yet had to get all the divions possible to help from Rumania, Hungary etc.
I do believe some generals were suggesting one summer of no attacking, and during which the troops would be armed and manned properly at least.

That would be interesting, giving the Red Army all that breathing pause and time to ammass more production to do the same in time for yet another winter offensive

My guess is if the Soviets did it one time with less experience and to my knowledge a lot of non-military combatants they could do it again with more troops, more experience, and higher morale from the victory of the previous year.
