What If? Alternate History: Speculate about WWII battles that never were. Could the Axis have won? What if Hitler had the bomb?

Default Operation Foxley went ahead

Say in some time late 1944 or early 1945 Hitler was assassinated the question is this -

Who ever took over the leadership would that person see clearly the war was lost and they open up talks with the Allies and bring about an end to the war.

Or so if that person knew it was over they could use the fear factor of the Russians invading Berlin and try to save Germany from more destruction.

Who's taking over? Himmler? Goerring? I'd think they'd want to hide their "you know" before even thinking of surrender.

I was thinking that myself.

I suspect there would be a power struggle between Himmler and Goering and as you pointed out FamerT there hidden crime. On reflection the hidden crime would have a major influence on them which would had caused the war to continual.

Could there be a possible factor that someone else would come forward? Or is that just too much to ask for.

That late in the war I can't see an assassination making too much difference to the eventual outcome.
I wouldn't imagine the allies would be any more interested in a conditional surrender than they actually were that late in the game. The Soviets would certainly have continued with 'Berlin or bust'.

To me, the more interesting scenario for a Hitler assassination would be 5 or 6 years before when all the big names of Nazism were in a more solid position, Heydrich was alive, and there was more potential for political flux, but that's already been touched on esewhere.

Cheers,
Adam.

Now more I think of it, FramerT has raised an interesting point once Hitler gave the go ahead for the extermination program Hitler now committed Germany to victory or defeat. Even if he was assassinated and Germany facing defeat on all fronts they would have no choice but to fight on to the bitter end.

If there was no extermination program then it may have been possible to open up talks with the Allies and try to save Germany from more destruction.
