| What If? Alternate History: Speculate about WWII battles that never were. Could the Axis have won? What if Hitler had the bomb? |

Re: What if it weren't raining in this parade?
From: ROAD TO VICTORY [THE VOICE OF RUSSIA]
Quote:
Accompanied by the beat of drums, 200 participants in the war marched to the Lenin mausoleum in Red Square and threw Nazi banners at its door. There were about 200 such banners. The honor of throwing Hitler’s personal banner on the cobblestones of Red Square had been bestowed on Senior Sergeant Fyodor Legkoschur who had been wounded in action more than once.
It was raining heavily during the parade, and the Nazi banners soaked in pools of water.
The rain was symbolic too. The victory was joy accompanied by tears, because millions of Russians had not returned from the battlefields. The war had lasted for 1418 days and nights. And though it had ended, the sorrow was still fresh…

From: German flags, banners, militaria (more pictures of the Standard's rightful resting place on there).
Cheers,
Adam.

Re: What if it weren't raining in this parade?
The symbolism is striking, from the Nuremburg rallys to the footpath of the Kremlin, pity we have not learned a damn since. And yes the parade was held in the rain, to some such as myself rain symbolises a cleansing.
R.I.P those who died on both sides.

Owen's been sharing more of these with me, particularly drawing my attention to the halo at 6:49 in this one :
YouTube - Großer Zapfenstreich 50 Jahre Bundeswehr
(The panning out shot after it is oddly 'reminiscent' too, entertaining stuff.)
cheers,
Adam.
