Re: What if somebody did?
Two scenarios
1. Involves a Luger and a nice hole behind the ear.
2. An event that chrush the myth of Germans having no sence of humor, they think it's part of the 'show' and burst out in laughter.

I don't normally like these "What ifs" but I have been thinking of this for a while! I'm not sure what the result would have been, but I think that if if wasn't him someone else would have started it up!

Re: What if somebody did?
Probably someone did in his younger days and it was probably a girl which is why he could not hold a relationship with them as an adult.

The people of Iceland would be finally free of the dastardly machinations of the Reich scientists and their twittering devices?

Re: What if somebody did?
I was wondering out of all those thousands of people in formation, a few of them had to need to use the bathroom and there does not seem to be any near by. How did the Germans handle such problems or were they indeed the super race ?

I'm imagining the rush to the latrine after the speech. Hope Hitler did not speak too long.

I once attended a large parade (well, not as large as this) when exactly that happened.
When the bugle sounded "Dismiss" every single one ran for a nearby wall and , public present or no public present, we could hear hundreds of relieved sighs!
Honest! Cross my heart!

Re: What if somebody did?
I remember that we had a change of battallion commander in August in 1996. It was hotter than hell and we were told to not drink at lunch. So there we were in the sun lined up. The new commanders plane was running late. Still no water, and nobody was let out of formation. (we used fishing lines to make the formation down to mm) Then people started dropping like flies. The remedy was to have the platoon commanders carry water around to their platoons to hydrate. Man I have never had such a headache as that day. We DID look perfect though.

I sure know how that feels. I've stood on formation and parades for more times than I can count. But the hardest came during parade practice. It's actually easier during the actual parade because we already know how long it would take. Since I was the FA Bn's S1/4, I stood at the front with the other staff and we have to keep a straight face no matter what.

Re: What if somebody did?
I've heard "horror" stories about the New Years Eve gathering in Times Square. During the millennium thing.
I recon when alcohol is added to hours of standing....well, you get the picture.
One said, liquid was ankle deep. Booze, vomit, etc.
Bring a bottle, (with screw lid), a big one....hehehehe
...or just watch it on TV...
Happy New Year !

Re: What if somebody did?
Threadjack alert.
The romantic story from Times Square makes me think of the Badging ceremony when we became Jaegers. We went into Kirkenes and had right piss up. The place called 'Gorby' after the Soviet premier, was packed before we came and it got a lot worse. Everybody jumping up and down with a pint in one hand, and a bottle of Jaegermeister in the other. We were soaking wet from the torso down.

Hahahaha!
Personally, I haven't seen any splashed boots but I have witnessed more than one stained olive drab pants after standing formation. fortunately I can say it never happened to me.
