Why did Hitler believed that ?
Why did Hitler believed that Japan would attack Russia?
Is it because Hitler knew/thought that Japan wanted Russia out of the Soviet Union?
Japan did go for the natural resources in Southeast Asia. Japan was smart enough to realise that in Russia was nothing worth the trouble.
But why did Hitler believed that?
[There was an agreement in 1941 that neither Japan or Russia would fight against eachother. (Russia declared war on Japan on the last days of the war because of an agreement with the U.S)]

Say what???
And if this is a straight question why is it in the What If section? This forum has more sections other than the Twilight Zone, you know.

What's the Twilight zone?
I found that somewhere, when I was surfing for some answer, that's is why there stands Hitler thought. I don't know more that's why I ask.

All right, I'll put it into two parts...

What is the meaning of "Russia out of the Soviet Union?"
2)
The Twilight Zone is something that it is natural younger members of the forum won't recognize even by name, but even on a simple Google search the first result was this:
The Twilight Zone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Each episode is a self-contained fantasy, science fiction, or horror/terror story

Hence the analogy to this forum's what-ifs. I rest my case.

Not sure he believed, more on the lines of hoped
And Japan and Russia had a small confrontation in 39' after which Japan decided it would be best not to flex her muscle there.

Re: Why did Hitler believed that ?
What time frame are talking about here? I would think that Hitler did not want any assistance at the onset of Barbarossa because he was confident he would achieve victory on his own (with token assistance from his eastern european allies).

Re: Why did Hitler believed that ?
I think that Hitler was more or less delving into the wishful thinking basket and that Japan would open up a second front, tying down the Soviet Far Eastern Command.

Re: Why did Hitler believed that ?
Correct me if I am wrong but didn't the japanese have plans for expansion into what they called the Northern Resource Area? From what I see, this implies that they did have plans for eventually taking on Russia after securing the Southern Resource Area (Southeast Asia).

Re: Why did Hitler believed that ?
They did, but after the Khalkin-Gol and Nonmomhan disasters and the involvment with the Sphere of Cooperation plus Pearl Harbour, they gave up on those plans.
Besides who cares for a barren desert where you see grass for only three months in a year? There was nothing in Siberia but empty vastness.*
What northenr resources? While there were the rich pickings of rice, oil, rubber, metals, etc in China and Southeast Asia, why go for snow and grass? Besides, as for what concerns North the already had Manchukuo and that was Northern enough for them.
* Quite the opposite but the Japanese did not know that, it was a closely guarded secret. And what there is is so spread apart the entire Siberia that it is simply impossible to control. Remember there was only one Transsiberian line, with a few branches for some specific places, but even those were secret. And when a in Stalin's time (and others) somebody said the word 'secret' says, then it meant 'damn top secret'!

Thanks for info. I was misinformed then of what the Northern Resource Area really meant for the Japanese.

I recall the Japanese had offensive plans depending on which nation would be crumbling to pieces. In case of the US other reasons would lead to war.
"When crisis leading to worst arises following will be broadcast at
end weather reports; one east wind rain war with United States, two
north wind cloudy war with Russia, three west wind clear war with
Britain including attack on Thailand or Malaya and Dutch Indies. If
spoken twice burn codes and secret papers."
THE "WINDS CODE"

Re: Why did Hitler believed that ?
in december '41 hitler believed the war in russia was about to finish in a matter of days, so a japanese attack would be unnecessary. On the contrary, i'm sure he hoped japan did not attack because he didn't want to share his imminent triumph with anybody else.
Maybe in '42 hitler changed his mind. did germany put more pressure on japan in 42? is there any document on that?

I thought the Japanese were trying to gain the entire Yak Milk concessions east of the Urals and salt for their sushi stands along the Trans-Siberian Railway.

Re: Why did Hitler believed that ?
In 1939, Manchuria was a puppet state of Japan, known as Manchukuo. The Japanese maintained that the border between Manchukuo and Mongolia was the Khalkhyn Gol (English "Khalkha River") which flows into Lake Buir, while the Mongolians and their Soviet allies maintained that it ran some 16 kilometres (10 miles) east of the river, just east of Nomonhan village.
From
Battle of Khalkhin Gol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sounds like another battle of " I decide where the border goes ".
