Dear Forum Members,

A few weeks ago I was alerted by one of my contacts at another forum of a book written by a former Kriegsmarine vet (now an American citizen). It is a 3 part series:
#1) "Paid in Full" - Memories of a German Lieutenant, #2) "Home by Christmas" - Memories of a German Prisoner of War & #3)"Twentyseven Dollars" - Memories of a German Immigrant. She contacted me about book #2 because the author was in the same POW camp as my father was. Needless to say I sent away for the book (through Amazon.com)right away and was quite pleasantly surprised to see illustrations of the camp my Dad was at. Although the book is told through the eyes of a fictional character, it is based on the real life events of the author. I sent a letter straight away to the author and received a quick reply. It was quite an interesting book and I found myself finishing it quickly to find out what became of the charachter's escape, recapture & eventual release. I recommend it to all who are interested in seeing this era through the eyes of the "other side".

Roland: 2 questions: 1) Are these books in English? 2) How much are they? Pls let me know-take care--Carl.

By the way: I was rivited to the book you sent me. I had to force myself into NOT reading more than about 15 pages a day for fear of finishing it off too quickly. I was surprised at its ending. I tell you what, it made me feel as if I were back in Germany again. Heh heh--especially the part where someone did the gesture of forefinger to the head at some crazy driver. I was at some of the places mentioned. I sure wish Susanne could have been with me in Heidelberg.

Hi Carl,

Yes, all three books are in English. They're about $25 a piece.

Regards,

Roland

Dear Roland--thanks, sounds great but, Owch!! on the price--I suppose its worth it though. They must be like "Shooting The War" By: Otto Giese. His book too is excellent--there never was a dull moment in the book. You have a trip down memory lane through his eyes.

I was presented my copy of his book at the U 181 vet reunion. Bernhard Trenn is currently writing his onw book on U 181 now, and there are several more coming out that mention U 181 and Wolfgang Luth.
