Gents,
A long shot, but is there someone who collects the 'Flying Aces' magazines?
I am looking for the July 1944 issue. In it is a story by Lt. Greer of the 91BG, about the January 11, 1944 mission to Oschersleben/Braunschweig/Halberstadt. His B17 was badly shot up but he managed to fly it back, low level, to his base in the UK.
If anybody has this issue, I would very much like to have a copy of this story.
Thanks
Stevin

Hello Stevin, there was a dealer who was in Oregon, that used to sell stuff like that. Its been a few years since I bought anything from him and im hard-pressed to even think of his name. I'll see if I can find his website and let you know it so you can see what he has. The last time I bought anything from him was in late '97 or early '98. All I can remember is his first name is George.

Hi Carl,
I have found a few copies on Ebay, abebooks.com and other sites, but not the issue I am looking for. I just got an e-mail suggesting trying to get a photocopy of the article through a Stateside library, like the Smithsonian (interloan). I did find they hold the magazines (1928 - 1945, I believe) and wrote them an e-mail requesting the unrequestionable(?)...we will see....However, I am always interested in 'addresses' were I can get interesting material, so if you happen to come across that Oregon e-mailaddress or website, I'll keep myself recommended. No rush though...I know youre busy. Also, Thanks again for the e-mail!

Hey Stevin !
Got your latest note and still working on this air battle. Since I'm here i will ask you, was it the 447th that lost it's pathfinders to Bf 110's with rockets ? 3 B-17's were lost in a quick attack according to two of my references, but the bomb group is not mentioned. Most probably now it looks like the 3rd bomb division was beat to a pulp. As to Freiburg archiv's, there is a header with the ZG 26? KTB mentioned from October 43 to June of 44. This item is being sent to me direct but if you get a chance to shop over there this year or next this would be good to pick up.
ZG 26 given credit for 8 B-17's
ZG 26 given credit for 10 B-17's
good to see you on this board !
Erich

Hi Erich!
As far as I can see, the 447th didn't loose any PFF ships (447th mission reports are nearly non-existant for this mission). One B17 was shot to pieces by a rocket over the target (Braunschweig)killing Lt.Col. Bowman. A second crashlanded near Wagenfeld/Diepholz, also after being hit by rockets. The third ditched into the North Sea. The 447th flew in their own group, just after the leading 94th BG. These two BGs also flew in a composite group. Three 447 ships couldn't form with their own BG and tagged along with the 94th. Two of these where shot down. The 94th flew lead and with (I believe two) PFF ships. I am at work now. When I am home, I will check if the 94th lost their PFF. They lost 8 a/c, mostly over the target...381bg lost 8 a/c, 303bg 11 a/c, 91bg 5...
BTW; Bombing was done visually! And the target was only to be bombed when visually sighted...Groups that actually did bomb, did so with good results...
So, more later today thru e-mail....
Carl, thanks again, I will await SI's response before asking you to mobilize your people in Oregon!

Thanks Stevin !
That answers that about the 447th. As we talked the 303rd got chased by JG 11 and JG 1 and about 3 Bf 110's, so that can't be the bomb group. Some other then...... still the search continues.
Erich
Carl, I'll check this weekend with Mr Krakow and find out what the bloody heck happened to your photo !!......this is very un-business like to say the least.

Stevin, quite welcome.
Erich, much appreciated my friend. I won and paid for a neat photo of a Schnellboot from krakow (sounds like the name to an Ioation from Star Trek--you know, the one where Kirk, Spock and McCoy dressed like members od john Dillingers gang) and krokow has never replied to my emails nor sent me the photo I got just for this forum.
If he ticks me off enough, :edited by me with respect for others who might read this message:

Carl, send the particulars on this e-bay item by private mail please. I want to pay particular attention to details so he doesn't shy away from me as I am getting to know this guy a little and he wants my help with his site. I find this very weird as he has been very kind to me and free with information, but you never know with people do ya ?!
