Hey all, good to be on the board...

I'm just looking for opinions on if "Delivered From Evil" will serve as a good place to start learning about WWII -- as a starting point, basically. I've seen other books mentioned over DfE, but the reason I'm asking is that for some reason I have long had a copy of "Delivered From Evil" and will save my money for future books of it will suffice as an overall intro.

Welcome to the forums, goodfellah! Hope you enjoy yourself in here!

I think the book is the right one to start and get an overall view on the war. And it mostly sure will make you ask a thousand questions and will make you want to get more in-depth details, what will bring you to buy more precise WWII books and going around this forums!

I very unwisely forgot about another recommendation for starters, a much better book than the one you mentioned.

This is Churchill's "The Second World War". I'm sure you can very easily get an illustrated and abridged cheap version. It will perfectly introduce you into WWII and every paragrph you read you'll mostly enjoy, since Churchill's Nobel-like style is utterly delicious!

Hehe... the only copy I could find of Churchill's book on Amazon was upwards of $200.

If, like you said, "Delivered From Evil" will do the job as a primer which will lead me into the topic then I'm going to finish it and move one. To be honest, the thing that has sparked my interest is that I'm taking a class on the USSR in WWII class next quarter in college and have really taken to it. I'm really getting into it and looking forward to it.

Oof ! Secondhand copies of the Churchill work can easily be found in UK bookshops for around £3 per volume....

At amazon.com the Churchill WWII series is $77 for the six volumes and free shipping within the US. A single volume must cost some $12 and an abridged version some $25.

I bough a huge and nice illustrated and abridged copy in Montréal for some $20...
