Hello gentlemen,

I was in London this weekend and left short of cash, but with a lot of books:
- Death was our companion, Tony le Tissier
- What Stalin Knew, David Murphy
- The German Army on the Somme 1914-1916, Jack Sheldon

And on my hitlist and finally in my possession:
- Tank Men, Robert Kershaw
- Battle Tactics of the Western Front, Paddy Griffith

So you can see it was a nice weekend as I also visited The Imperial War Museum.

D-Days in the Pacific by Donald L. Miller
I doubt I will finish it. Chaulked full of inacuracies. Claims at Midway the Kaga was struck by "over 3000 allied bombs". Also makes claims the US Battleships carried in upwards of 15000 crew, MacArthur "invented the Island hopping strategy", and much more. Makes almost no mention that it was the Austrailians leading, not Americans, the push against the Japanese back across the Kokoda trail. As I said, I'm not liking it, though it does have a large and very good selection of pictures.

I guess this must be the magnum opus by Patrick Agte. It has recently been reprinted by JJ Federowicz and has never been a cheap book.

For one thing, it is huge, with many photos which are unavailable elsewhere. The quality of production is high (good-quality paper and binding ). Lastly, as so often in our field, it is a specialized subject from a small publisher - a small print run for such a quality book inevitably means a high price tag.

We've dicussed this book often before on the Forum. IMPO Agte is a little too admiring and uncritical of his subject ( on reflection, I am understating the case ! ). But without doubt he has had access to sources unavailable to other authors, so, if you are really, really interested in Peiper this is an essential purchase.

I like Kershaw. I've read his book The Few, and just started Escape From the Deep about the USS Tang and the plight of her survivors

It definitely is, I'm currently at page 183 of 500 (the German/Romanian forces have just entered the outskirts of the city).

It's very well written and is very detailed about the experiences of the soldiers and civilians. Also, the small maps and pictures in the book give a great overview of the battle.
