Hey all!
I read a great book a while back, An Army at Dawn, by Rick Atkinson. It was part one of the liberation trilogy. Would anyone know when the next book is coming out? Thanks for your help.

Just in case anyone is wondering the second book in the Liberation Trilogy is going to come out sometime in 2005. The author went over to Iraq and so his book was postponed.

Yeah, I"m reading "In the Company of Soldiers : A Chronicle of Combat" about his time in Iraq.
I was thinking about getting "an army at dawn" too.
So, you did like the way he wrote, I mean on the levels of command etc...

Rick Atkinson, currently a Visiting Professor (or comparable title) at the US Army War College, notes on one of his websites - http://www.anarmyatdawn.com/forum/ - that Volume 2 of the Liberation Trilogy, extending the Mediterranean Theater history up to the liberation of Rome, should be released in the fall of 2007.
I've been told the delay is primarily to allow for confirmation of all the information and sources. The delay is mildly frustrating for me as a reader, but I expect it will be another outstanding book worth the wait.

I have "Army at Dawn",
It seems to be a good, balanced work, I cant find any glaring errors(well, what I think are errors!)
Sad to see the next book is 2 years away.
His "In Company with Soldiers" is good, plus "The Thin Grey Line", both worth the read.

Re: Liberation Trilogy
Another rescued thread.... ...believe it or not, the second volume of the trilogy has just been published and is being enthusiastically reviewed in the British press.
The book is called ' The Day Of Battle : The War In Sicily And Italy 1943-1944' ( Little, Brown ) and Raleigh Trevelyan ( who fought in tha campaign ) rates the book very highly in this months' Literary Review. Rick Atkinson's earlier book won a Pulitzer Prize and this follow-up is depply-researched and - reportedly - unbiased. It also throws much new light on the character of the controversial Mark Clark.
I shall be buying this one.....

Re: Liberation Trilogy
In the midst of reading an Army at Dawn and absolutely fascinated on how little I knew about that theater's beginning stages. It really is incredibly written and a great read, I'll definetly have to pick up the one on Italy also, looking forward to it.

Re: Liberation Trilogy
There's a quite interesting - although rather brief - interview with Rick Atkinson in this months' ( Nov. 2007 ) issue of World War II magazine. Some thoughts on the mutual antipathy between the British/American commanders and also - fortunately - Atkinson does not hold with the 'greatest Generation' theory.....

Re: Liberation Trilogy
The Day of Battle is also getting good reviews here in the States. Makes me look forward to the final part of the trilogy - ought to be a real challenge for Atkinson given how much has already been written about the last 11 months of war in Europe.

Re: Liberation Trilogy
I've read the first two books. Both are absolutely fantastic.
I emailed Atkinson on a whim--I got his email address from his website: www.liberationtrilogy.com -- and he actuallly wrote back! I was commenting to him how unaware I was about the sloppiness of the American invasion in North Africa, and how interesting the improvement of the Army developed. He wrote back saying that he really enjoyed hearing from readers...pretty cool, in my opinion.
