I have to admit I am quite sad as a I can give an exact figure to this, that is 336. This is because I keep a catalogue on MS Excel. Just wondering what sort of collection you guys have.
As to journal and magazines that I have lost count and probably runs in the 1000's. This is because I have good access to most academic journals, such as RUSI, Journal of Military History, War in History and the Journal Strategic Studies. So I have managed to download a lot of articles while I have been at university.
So come on guys how big is your 'library'?

Probably about 700+ books. But Im not sad enough to bother counting them... Same goes for magazines and journals, too many to bother with... But I have every issue of Wargames Illustrated so thats 213 magazines alone... without counting all the others... Then there is all the research documents...
Too much to bother counting... All I know is that it wighs a ton... especially when we move house... as we are doing again on Friday... yuk...

I have around 175 books, mostly on aviation but some on tanks and cars. I have around 1000 airplane magazines and I agree with you on moving them to a new house !! But I can't bring my self to throw them out even though most I have not looked at in years.
I wish I had more airplane books, but the cost of them today is about 5 times what they were in the 70's and 80's. You could get a good hard back book with lots of pictures back then for $9.95. Now it cost that much for shipping and handling. I would have to take out a bank loan to get a new copy of "Jane's All the Worlds Aircraft"

Good question, I never bothered counting. If I include all military history and throw in my wargames and modelling magazines, I might total 10m+ of shelf length, plus some 5m+ plus for general history.
Total bookshelf length in the house will be around 35m, I'm not sure , but that's a damn lot for me when it's time to move again, and that's something I'm going to do again, I'm afraid!
Red Baron, where are you moving to?

After counting what is on my shelves, I have come up with 194, most of them (about 100-125) on the Pacific Theater with the rest covering other aspects of military history that have piqued my curiosity from time to time. Unfortunately the to be read stack continues to grow and now numbers 32.

Hundreds....I'm honestly trying to impose some kind of control (!).
One whole shelf on Arnhem alone, one entire book-case on the Battle of Britain, sixteen volumes of FlyPast magazine, about 130 After The Battles , etc etc

hehehehe…
Er… 7.000+ and counting…
Sorry… but I've inherited both my grandparents' library and I buy just too many books per week…
But there must be some 180 about WWII, WWI and military history… the rest are about art, literature, enciclopædias, photography, music, etcetera, etcetera…

Well, erm...
I think I have some 500+ books, I did earlier in youth go to library alot but started buying them around 2000 when I started my earlier hobby of WW2 history again. Actually did not read many WW2 books between 1985 to 2000 as I was concentrating on my job. Does that shock you...??!

too many as I need to weed them out as I am getting pretty specific. some 6500 last count 6 years ago or so.....well I think it was then. Some very old titles that need to be trashed, but then again. And because of the specifics I have become real attentive to only those I can use for research purposes so possibly 4-5 books a year get added to the shelves

I haven't got a clue on numbers....WW2 titles probably between 1000-1500. Have been receiving quite a few titles in the last few months, but just like Erich am weeding out the books I won't read or don't touch upon my area of interest. Have sold about 30 books in the last few months or so... money in the bank to afford the books I will read.
Then other history books which amount up to another 1500 or so.
In any case, I am still looking for far more books than I have already...

It's gotta be several thousand. I have no exact count. They fill my 10' x 16' "study" floor to near ceiling on all the walls except where there are doors and windows and there are piles on the floor a foot or two thick. The wife says that I have little rabbit paths between them and complains she cannot even come in and sit down in the second chair which is piled with books too.
I probably have read at least twice what I've got on the shelves (I keep a big log book on these just in case something comes up where I need the reference). Did my masters in military history without going to the library once....I did have to buy a few of the books for some classes though like one on ancient Chinese naval warfare... This is where I admit to being the poor relation
Can only recount 300 (mostly WW2) military history books, and another 250-ish on mediaeval history.
A lot of new titles on WW2 British military archaeology have recently come into print, so I'm concentrating on getting those for now.

Ah, now Martin!
I actually have about four of the following:
Colin Dobinson
Fields of Deception; Britain's Bombing Decoys of WW2
Anti-Aircraft Command; Britain's Anti-Aircraft Defences of the Second World War
Building Radar; Forging Britain's Early Warning Chain 1939-45
Mike Osbourne:
Defending Britain; Twentieth Century Military Structures in the Landscape
P. Francis:
British Military Airfield Architecture; from Airships to the Jet Age
There are also the following titles, whose authors I can't remember;
B. Lowry(?)
Handbook on 20th Century Defences (CBA Practical Archaeology Handbooks)
(?)
British Airfield Buildings of the Second World War (vols. 1 & 2)
If I remember right, Ian V. Hogg did a book on Britain's Coastal Defence Guns from 1856-1956, but that was 1974 and you might only get it from UKBookworld these days.
The same goes for DJ Smith's series Action Stations, which were published by Patrick Stephens Ltd and covered all the airfields of Britain.
I think all of these books contain gazetteers of the sites they're discussing, so they're well worth getting hold of.

I have the whole set of Action Stations ; I remember ordering Vol 1 direct from the long-defunct ( ) Patrick Stephens Ltd as soon as it was published.
These books have been responsible for many hours of 'detours' and countless gallons of petrol visiting historic sites.
Even now, I'm musing over visiting some of 100 Group's Norfolk locations....
