Out this week is a new paperback-only book, 'Firestorm : The Bombing Of Dresden 1945' ed. Addison/Crang ( Pimlico, ISBN 1-844-13928-x ).
I assume the sensational title and - confusingly - the same cover photo as used on McKee's book have been decided by the publisher to increase sales potential.
In fact, the book is a very interesting selection of essays from British, German and American scholars originally presented at a forum in Edinburgh in 2003. Many aspects of the morality of strategic bombing, the context of early 1945, the Allies' decision-making process and the historiography of 'Dresden' are discussed. Use is made of the very latest research and opinion. Contributors include Sebastian Cox, Prof. Richard Overy and Soenke Neitzel.
At a time when 'what is done in our name' is of great concern, this is a thought-provoking book. I have found it engrossing and recommend it to anyone who is seriously interested in the subject.
( WARNING : If anyone is tempted to use this thread to regurgitate the arguments associated with the subject, please use the forum's 'search' facility. You'll find that we have said it all before ).
