Default Tony Le Tissier books

Hello gentlemen,

I hope you can/ will help me out.
Tony Le Tissier was the last British Governor of Spandau Allied Prison and a writer/historian. His work 'Berlin Then and Now' is hold in high esteem.

Are the following books of the same ( serious ) quality ?
-Slaughter at Halbe
-With our backs to Berlin
-Death was our companion
-Berlin dance of death
-The battle for Berlin

As you can tell I'm interested in the apocalyptical struggle for Berlin, but I like to read serious history books.

Regards,
I-16 Rata

Thumbs up Re: Tony Le Tissier books

I have read

Berlin dance of death: great book on the battles in Berlin , you can almost smell the smoke and blood.

Slaughter at Halbe. Ok book but rather fast to read. Got interesting details on the battles South East of Berlin but like I said felt a bit short.

Lightbulb Re: Tony Le Tissier books

This is purely my own opinion, Rata - 'Berlin:Then & Now' is indeed a most excellent book but then, most books produced by the team at 'After The Battle' are just that !

But Tony le Tissier's other books, while interesting and very readable, I'd hesitate to class as 'serious history' in the same way as, for instance, John Erickson - I'm not sure that they're 'in-depth' enough. But they contain interesting personal accounts.

IMHO his best book ( excepting 'B : T&N ' ) is the one he wrote about the final era at Spandau which is, of course, based on his own personal experiences.

Hello gentlemen,

Thank you for your reactions. I've ordered 'Race for the Reichstag: The 1945 Battle for Berlin'(1999). It's written from the Soviet point of view, and the reviews were good ( for what it's worth ). As for most other books from this author I am a bit sceptical. Thanks.

Regards,
I-16 Rata
