Default The Cruel Sea

I've just read The Cruel Sea by Nicholas Monsarrat.

It's a very lively and interesting book about the Atlantic war, which recounts the experience of members of a crew of British anti submarine ships.

Althought it's not full of technical details, it's very good at depicting how this aspect of the war was felt at the time and also the impact it had on the people involved.

Overall this is a rather sad a grim book, leaving a feeling of waste and loss, like all book about war should.

Thumbs up Re: The Cruel Sea

That is a very good, old-fashioned novel ( which to me is praise, not a criticism ).

Also worth reading if you can get a copy is 'Three Corvettes', a collection of three true-life stories from Monsarrat's own wartime service, and on which he based much of the detail in 'The Cruel Sea'.

Thanks, Martin for the information on the other Monsarrat book. The Cruel Sea is also one of my favourites - one of the earlier books in my collection.
