Writers to stay away!
Wel folks there are a lot of "what's your favourite book"" threads so I decided to create this after a bad experience.
The books I advise everyone not to buy are:
Amazon.co.uk: Jane's World War II Tanks and Fighting Vehicles: The Complete Guide: L.S. Ness: Books - has a lot of mistakes including showing a Panzer III with an external gun mount and aplique armor and stating it's an ausf F with 37mm gun. Also, some fotos are reversed and they talk about a comander cupola on the left side while in the picture is on the right side :S
Amazon.co.uk: The T-34 Tank (Weapons of War) (Weapons of War): Matthew Hughes, Christopher Mann: Books - bought this book the other day, the most badly spent £6... The book as so many mistakes I don't know where to start... The first one that got to my attention (as I browsed the book randomly) was a production table wich stated that some 1500 panthers were built in 42 and in 45 none was produced I tought "ok printer error. Moved the production a year earlier it happens"... then, they cclamed that the Russians in Kursk destroied 400 Tigers! And I was "Wow More Tigers than those that had been produced so far! the german military was really advanced in time! They were getting Tigers that were produced in the future!" then that the Russians managed to destroy 25 divisions in the battle of Kursk... Now let's do the math, the German divisional slice of the day was around 12~13000 men (at home I have the corret numbers but for now these will do) so, 25 X 13000 = 325000 men! Considering that the Germans from June to September lost just over 265000 men I find that hard to believe... It also mentions that the Germans tank force was totally mauled in Prokhorovka... Considering that in the battle itself II SS-Panzer corps lost 54 tanks (!) it's kinda hard to believe. The majority of the tanks were destroied in the defense of Kracov and Orel. And mainly because they didn't control the battlefield so they had to abandon many tanks with minor breakdowns or damage.
I've heard that this series of books is quite flawed so I'd stay away...
Please do post your stay away books.
Cheers...

Re: Books to stay away!
I'm no fan of anything by Stephen Ambrose. IMO, he tended to "borrow" a bit too much.

Re: Books to stay away!
I had a teacher in high school who always said that there are no good or bad books, just bad writers.
So maybe the thread name would be more accurate if it says "Writers to stay away from or avoid."
Just my two cents worth.

Re: Books to stay away!
..subject will be familiar enough ...
Alexander McKee, Dresden 1945: The Devil's Tinderbox.
"..the long suppressed story of the worst massacre in the world.."
..this is only book I've ever thrown away ...
