Default New Online: USA Army in WWII PDF format.

The United States Army in World War II (The "Green Books") sets 1-5 of 7, are available online at Index of /pha/USA-in-WWII

Patrick Clancey and I will improve the site over the next few weeks to improve access to the files.

NOTE: If you plan on downloaded all five sets, please note that total file is just a bit larger than a JS-III, 5.32 gigabytes. You may want to have a hot connection for that project.

As stated elsewhere, we're looking for the final two sets. Will compensate you for time, material, etc. for copies.

OP,

Were you intending to show the file index instead of a webpage?

It's a work in progress, so yes, that's where we are right now. Improvement continues. We will, ultimately, have a index page that links to each PDF volume AND to the HTLM version. I put this version up to insure that they would be accessible to the people who will be using them in class in the future. They requested as much lead time as possible to download the material and find the relevant areas for reference.

I will post as developments warrant. Until then, we'll just soldier on.

Okay, just didn't want you having files visible that you didn't necessary want visible. I was concerned that your index page was incorrect.

I don't worry too much about index pages. I encourage people to down load my sites, it distributes the information farther. As everything I upload is public domain it's only fair that the public get full crack at the material. My WWII Resources page has a link to download a zip file of the entire site.

Thanks for the check, however, I don't want to put up faulty webpages that increase the chaos. (There are other, more fun ways of doing that. )

I've put up a index for the main page, but due to a technical glitch it won't be visible for a few hours. When you can see it you will be able to find the volumes that interest you more quickly.

Cheers.

I bought a copy of the print version of The Last Offensive back in the Autumn. Whilst reading about the preparations for the Rhine Crossing I was shocked to read the following, on page 299:

Having seen no combat since the Normandy invasion, the British 6th Airborne Division was at full strength...

The Division re-entered the European Theatre on Christmas Day, 1944. It went into action four days later in the Ardennes salient and remained in contact with the enemy until the middle of February.

I wrote to the CMH, pointing out the error, and adding a hope that it would be corrected in the online version, or referenced through an Erratum. I received no reply. I would be most grateful if my request could be fulfilled.

Thanks, I'll fix that promptly. It'll be online by tomorrow morning!

Having had no response, even though OpanaPointer had been back on the thread, I followed up with a PM. That was two days ago and still no response. Even an acknowledgement would have been a start. There is a factual inaccuracy in the book, which needs correcting. I believe I've made a reasonable request. Am I being too picky? I'd be interested to read what other members think.

Sorry, I had no idea there was a PM waiting for me.

Sir, please understand that I am concerned with getting correct information on the Web, just as you are. However, It's not my place to retro-fit information into other people's documents/books. I have 20,000+ pages of documents online, and all of them are both complete and faithful to the original. My goal is to allow the online user to put an electronic copy of the book next to the paper copy and see the same material on both.

I have been asked, among other things, to remove the word "collaborator" from the "Cross-Channel Attack" book. In that same volume they used "Pont du Hoe" instead of "Pont du Hoc". I didn't make either change. Such revisionism is not something I do. My usual response in these cases is to invite the person with the suggestion to create (or contribute to) a site that has the correct information.

Thank you for your response and, please, forgive me. I had got the impression that you were a member of the CMH's team that is publishing the 'Green Books' online. I see that the 'Last Offensive' is still not on the CMH's website, so I will contact the centre, again, about the revision to that volume.

Good luck with that. I'm sure you're familiar with the red-tape squad. It takes us a year to get a five-page document online at the Naval Historical Center.

Ah, that's interesting. With regard to The Green Books, you must be very pleased with the CMH allowing you to publish its work alongside its own current project.

Two points there. First, they can't stop us. The books are in public domain, so we can put them online if we wish. The integrity of the works are carefully maintained, but we can cycle through a lot faster than the CMH for reasons noted above.

Second, when somebody picks up a project the CMH and NHC are usually glad to have the resources available for something else. We've provided them will links to everything we put online.

I think projects like this are worthwhile or I would be doing something else. Apparently 4,000+ Unis agree with me, they've all links to our sites. Two of the ten links the National Archives has on their WWII Resources page are mine and Patrick's.

I'm currently negotiating with UNC to put zip copies of the Green Books online at the site above. I'm giving them the call of adding the zips and/or replacing the PDFs. This seems reasonable as we are doing a major push to get the rest of the Green Books into HTML within the next year-eighteen months.

Further information posted as it becomes available.
