Ike's Strategic Mistake to Halt at the Rhine
http://www.amazon.com/Decision-Stras.../dp/1591141338
In late November 1944, just a day before Lt. Gen. Jacob Devers Sixth Army Group was to launch a bold attack across the Rhine into Germany, Gen. Dwight Eisenhower ordered a halt to the operation. Such an unexpected opportunity to cross the river, seal off the German 19th Army, and maneuver behind the German 1st Army fighting Gen. George Patton might have ended the war six months early. Until now, few have ever heard about this lost opportunity, and historians have never fully explained why Eisenhower stopped Devers, nor have they analyzed the possible outcome of such an attack.
Anyone read the book? Interesting theory?!

Eisenhower stopped the drive on Berlin because he was not interested in shedding American/British/French/etc. blood for it. And the possible "redoubt" in southern Germany was more a concern. The USSR had Berlin in their sights, and there were no other targets in northern Germany worth the effort.
Also, there was a predetermined "halt line" at the Elbe to prevent "blue-on-blue" casualties.
Nothing about what Ike did is a mystery, unless you're hyping a book.

Re: Ike's Strategic Mistake to Halt at the Rhine
It does not sound like this is a drive towards Berlin. It is talking about crossing the Rhine and close the trap on the 19th Army. Still miles away from Berlin or the Elbe. In any case, It may have trapped the German 19th but doubt it would have ended the war any sooner. The war ended when Hitler blew his brains out.

The Last Offensive, from the Army Green Book series, would seem to be relevant to this discussion.
