Exclamation I spent most of today doing this not only for me but for other fans of the Eastern Front.

Today I spent several hours finding titles I haven't seen nor noticed if mentioned here or not? which is about the War on the Eastern Front--mainly books about Stalingrad, Kurst, Kharkov, Courland Pocket, Operation Bagration, the fight for Berlin and such. I don't have time to post the info today but-the wiat will be worth-while. Anyway, some titles were familiar to me-most were not. I did this not only for my benefit-but the benefit for the several others who have asked me for advice on more books about E/Front-to buy and to read. In all, I found and read reviews for around 46 titles.

Default Re: I spent most of today doing this not only for me but for other fans of the Eastern Front.

I'll be interested in what you propose for the last months in Ost Preußia and along the Danziger Bucht Carl. there are some good titles but sadly nearly 99 % are in Deutsch.

Danziger Bucht 1945 bei Egbert Kieser and Flucht über's Meer bei Cajus Bekker, 2 great Classic and of course anything by author Heinz Schön.

I'll be waiting ........

War on the Eastern Front book titles list:

The Korsun Pocket: The Encirclement & Breakout of an German Army In the East. By: Niklas Zetterling & Anders Frankson. This is a book about Army Group South-which had been surrounded but saved itself by breaking out of the Pocket.

"Iron Horseman" The Memoirs of Obergefreiter Ernst Panse. This gives an account of a Panzer Soldiers experiances up through the Battle of Stalingrad-and I think also about his time in captivity. Panse served w/ 9th Kompanie PzRgmt 24-of the 24th Pz Div.

Eastern Front Combat. By: Hans Wijers. Hans Wijers has an excellet website that is about Stalingrad. Also, he's written more than one book AND, if I recall correcly-he had once been a member of this website.

Panzer Operations. The East Front Memoirs of General Raus, 1941-1945. By: Erhard Raus.

Blood and Iron: The German Conquest of Sevastopol. By: C.G. Sweeting.

German Panzers Order of Battle. I don't know why I didn't write down the Authors name?

Waffen SS Knights and Their Battles. B y: Peter Mooney. I think this was the one that gives a story about each man in the W-SS Pz arm-who got the KC.

Island of Fire by: Jason Mark. This book has detailed info on the fighting between the German 305th Inf Div & the Russian 138th Rifle Div/ @ Stalingrad.

Operation Citadel: A Text and Photo Album, Vol.1. The South. By: J. Restayn & N. Moller Contains 702 pics and is 460 pages.

The Battle of Kharkov by: Jean Restayn. I think this book is about the first battle for that area.

Bloody Streets: The Soviet Assault on Berlin, April 1945. By: A. Stephan Hamilton. 368 pages.

Zitadelle: The German Offensive Against the Kursk Sailent 4-17 July 1943. By: Mark Healy.

Operation Zitadelle, July 43: The Decisive Battles of WWII By: Franz Kurowski.

Road To Disaster By: Ian Baxter.

Last Victory In Russia: The SS Panzer Korps & Mansteins Kharkov Counteroffensive-Feb-March 43. By: George Nype. I heard this one was an excellent read.

I have more German language titles on the Ost front than English but here is a interesting read in his typical style and in English :

Franz Kurowski " Bridgehead Kurland, also+

Steven Newtons " Retreat from Lenningrad "

Carl your first mentioned title is a good read as well......

last one for now : George Nipes " Decision in the Ukraine, Summer 1943, II SS and III PzKorps "

one of the first titles to bunk out the myth that the German Tigers were slaughtered at Kursk in droves

Default Re: I spent most of today doing this not only for me but for other fans of the Eastern Front.

I have to do these in partial posts-sorry. I had about 15 more typed in and the computer messed up--again

Fedor von Bock: The War Diary, 1939-45. By: Fedor von Bock.

Red Storm Over the Balkans: The Failed Soviet Invasion of Romania. By: David M. Glantz. This guy is a great author.

Hitlers Flemish Lions. By: Jonathon Trigg. Apparently this is another book that is about Remy Schrijnen and his Comrades. I'm greatly looking forward to buying this one. Rest in Peace Remy-your friends greatly miss our association with you.

3rd Panzer Korps At Kursk. By: Didier Lodieu.

Marshal Zhukov At the Oder: The Decisive Battle for Berlin. By: Tony Le Tissier-who is another most excellent author.

Budapest: The Stalingrad of the Waffen SS. By: Richard Landweh.

Armageddon Ost: The German Defeat on the Eastern Front. By: Nik Cornish-who is another great Author.

Siege: The Epic Sieges of WWII on the Eastern Front. By: Patrick McTaggart.

Blood Red Snow: The Memoirs of a German Soldier on the Eastern Front. By: Gunther Koschorrek.

But Not For the Fuehrer. By: Helmut Lange. Details his experiances from indution int the Heer-to fighting on the eastern front. I found this very interesting-he also tells about fighting all female units.

The Battle of Kursk. By: David Glantz & Jonathon House. I think I have this one-and if so-it's a good read. 500 pages in length ad supposedly THE difinative account of the battle.

Th Battle for Budapest-100 Days in WWII. By: Krisztian Unguary.

Kursk: The German View. By: Steven Newton.

The Fall of Hitlers Fortress City: The Battle For Konigsburg, 1945. By: Isabel Denny.L. Tis one piqued my interests.

Sniper on the Eastern Front: The Memoirs of Sepp Allerberger. By: Sepp Allerberger & Albrecht Wacker. 196 pages.

The Russian Patriot. By: Sigismund Diczbalis. Details his memories serving first, in the Russian Army, then his capture by the Germans and his decision to join the Russian Army of Liberation. This one sounds very interesting.

Hi E, thanks for the additional titles.

Part 3.

The Caucasus and the Oil. By: Wilhelm Ticke.

The Eastern Front. By: Rolf Heinze. I think this one is about Operation Bagration???

Heres a good one for Kai in particular ;-))
The Sniper-Simo Hayha: One Shot One Kill. By: Tapio A.M. Saarelainen. This book is about the highest-scoring sniper of WWII. This man has 542 confirmed kills was promoted from Corporal to Lieutenant during the Winter War-1939-1940. He was awarded the Cross of Kollaa (Kollaan Risti) He was born in 1905-and passed away in 2002.

The Battle of Stalingrad: The Battle for the Factories. By: Hans Wijers. Again-I would more than bet that tis is an excellent book.

Turning Point: Recollections of a Russian Participants and witness of the Stalingrad Battle. By: P.P.Popov and B.G. Usik.

Bridgehead Kurland: The Six Epic Battles of Heeresgruppe Kurland. By: Franz Kurowski.

Armies of the Bear vol 1: Soviet Rifle Divisions 1917-1957. By: Michael Aranzini. This is also suppsed to contain some great info on the "Cold War: divisions as well. I think it also gives a great account of where these divisions fought, who their commanders were-and what citations were earned.

An Artilleryman in Stalingrad. By: Dr. Wigand Wuster.

The Road to Stalingrad: Nemisis on the Volga. By: Joachim Stempel. This bok i've heard-is also supposed to be a good one.

Red Road From Stalingrad, Recollections of a Soviet nfantryman By: Mansuer Abduliln. It's about his experiances at Stalingrad and Kursk.

Colossus Reborn. By: David M. Glantz. Talks about many famous battles as well as the forgotten ones.

C ~ Wilhelm Tieke's first book was first done in German under the now defunct Munin Verlag. Wilhelm has written some classics I enjoy his style,

Firestorm of the last war year covers the 9th and 10th W-SS Panzers written by Wilhelm. I have the original German version but it was translated and I think Martin Bull gave it a good review here somewhere in our past threads.

Also a classic German translated by JJF pubs is about the 11th W-SS Nordland " Tragedy of the Faithful ". Sadly the photos are very dark copies of the German originals.

Hi E, thanks for the extra titles as well as the rundown on Landwehrs books. I'll definately take you word for it and avoid them. Also, I might go back sometime and look up foreign language titles-that looked REAAAAAL good.

Hi E, yup--at least for me all I want is land warfare covered--but would make exceptions for sea warfare in 1945-such as the evacuation of units from Riga as well as anything on the tragedy of the sinking of the Wlhelm Gustloff.

I saw several titles that looked good-that were about air ops over Stalingrad, Kursk, and I forget where else? I should have included those too-but wasn't thinking clearly enough ;-)) I also turned my nose away from a title or two that had something to do with armored trains-or either Flak units on armored trains. Oh and I skipped on a few that were directed at the German drive towards Moscow-and such-because I loathed the authors who ""wrote"" the book(s)

Also, I completely ignored anything by david irving and "gordy" williamson. williamson is best known (in Waffen SS Vets and RKT Circles) as nothing but a liar and a thief--to which I firmly agree with.

I would while on the subject of rzm imports books suggest Platz der Leibstandarte-the ss-panzer-grenadier-divison "LSSAH" and the battle of Kharkov January-March 1943, by Remy spezzano and George nipe

I always 'bang the drum' for Carell's Eastern Front books here - despite his SS affiliations.....they are some of my favourite Eastern Front books.

There are 3 ( or three-and-a-half ) :

'Hitler's war On Russia Vol. 1 - Hitler Moves East' ( 1964 )
'Scorched Earth - Hitler's War On Russia Vol. 2' ( 1970 )
'Bildband' ( 1967 ) - photos to accompany the other two books.

Carell then produced 'Stalingrad' for Schiffer in 1993 which is basically an abridgement of the Stalingrad sections of 'Vol. 1' with some alterations and updating - it also has a useful black-and-white photo section.

Arrow Re: I spent most of today doing this not only for me but for other fans of the Eastern Front.

There are many very good books which so far have only been made available in German. I'd suggest taking a look at the bibliography in any copy of Beevor's Stalingrad ( where many of them are listed )as a starting-point.

The 'Eastern front airwar' historiography is interesting. For many years it was neglected ( again, particularly in English ) with only Muller's 'The German Air War In Russia' ( good, but now getting slightly dated ) and Brookes' 'Air War Over Russia' ( slight and unsatisfactory ) being easily available.

This has now changed and the last ten years have seen some excellent works appearing, including : -

'Stopped At Stalingrad'
by Joel S A Hayward (UP of Kansas, 1998 )
'Black Cross/Red Star Vol. 1 : Barbarossa' by Bergstrom & Mikhailov ( Pacifica 2000 )
'Black Cross/Red Star Vol. 2 : Resurgence' by Bergstrom & Mikhailov ( Pacifica 2001)
'Black Cross/Red Star Vol. 3 : Everything For Stalingrad' by Bergstrom/Dikov/Antipov ( Eagle Editions 2006)
'Barbarossa - The Air Battle' by Bergstrom ( Midland Counties 2007 )
'Stalingrad - The Air Battle' by Bergstrom ( Midland Counties 2007 )
'Kursk - The Air Battle' by Bergstrom ( Classic Publications 2008 )
'Bagration To Berlin - The Final Air Battles' by Bergstrom ( Classic Publications 2008 ).

These are all very good books !

Default Re: I spent most of today doing this not only for me but for other fans of the Eastern Front.

to anwer Skywalkers question, yes probably more for unit histories of all spheres in the GErman, to add to martins above posting on the Ost front air war, one needs to add the following :

Dr. Jochen Priens individual LW air histories from Struve Druck Verlag, Eutin, Germany.

JG 1/11, volumes 1-3
JG 3 all four gruppen

Eric Mombeeks JG 4 volume 2
Eric Mombeeks JG 5

JG 51 bei Aders/Held
JG 52 volumes- 3 ? Nikko Fast
JG 54 bei Aders Trautlofft, Bob

JG 300 bei Lorant/Goyat last months of the war - in Englsih, volume 2

'Hitler's war On Russia Vol. 1 - Hitler Moves East' ( 1964 )
'Scorched Earth - Hitler's War On Russia Vol. 2' ( 1970 )
'Bildband' ( 1967 ) - photos to accompany the other two books.

Carell then produced 'Stalingrad' for Schiffer in 1993 which is basically an abridgement of the Stalingrad sections of 'Vol. 1' with some alterations and updating - it also has a useful black-and-white photo section.

Hi Martin, SkyW/ and E,

Martin, thanks much for the additional titles. I have heard of some like: Scorched Earth-and heard it was a terriffic read. I'll definately be looking into the titles you suggested ;-))

SkyW/ I don't know if you ever go to Ebay or not? but, I found a seller or two there -when specifying E/Front books, that had some excellent books for sale at their stores. I don't remember who the dealers were but-you will find them easily enough when looking for E/Front books. Anyway, the reason why I mention this is because there were many many titles listed that were printed in German-and I think a few printed in Russian. The lists i saw were impressive and I looked through around 1,200 or so titles last week. Since mt German is veri schlecht-I didn't write down the names of those titles-but in hindsight-I should have.

E, thank you for the additional titles too. I recognize a couple of them.

Apart from Kurowski's book there's nothing in English on the Kurland pocket specifically. The good news is that my friend Kamen is writing a history as we speak. Oddly, there's not much in German either (a few Bildbands and a bit in divisional histories). I can't recommend Kurowski's book because I can't recommend pretty much anything by Kurowski... There's an outstanding German language website, Kurland Kessel, with loads of material. One of the best WW2 German sites out there.

For first hand accounts, Kempowski's Das Echolot: Fuga Furiosa is outstanding, a day-by-day account of people's experiences in Jan and Feb 1945. Four volumes, all in German, an absolute must.

For East Prussia, there is a wealth of material in German. There's a smattering of Russian memoirs beginning to emerge, however, in English. Denny's book is disappointing, chiefly because it was mis-sold by the publishers. It is not a history of the battle for Konigsberg. It is a history of Konigsberg under the Nazis, however.

I am slowly gathering published and unpublished material on Danzig, Konigsberg, Kolberg and other locations in Pomerania/East Prussia in 1945 for a future book.

Before that comes out, I've the small matter of the history of the siege of Breslau to finish. Should be published in 2011.

Th Battle for Budapest-100 Days in WWII. By: Krisztian Unguary.
I second this recommendation as well as any works by Glantz.

Although Glantz is a bit dry, and many times publishes little more than an outright translation of a Soviet General Staff study, by making such work available to the English speaking world he is performing an invaluable service.

If anybody knows of any other works in English they would recommend on the Battle of Budapest, Courland Pocket and the 1944/45 battles in Poland/EastPrussia/Czechoslovakia I would be happy to hear of them.

I meant to update the list with a few more titles I found but haven't had time. However, I do appreciate the thumbs up about that Budapest book.

I will probably get that one after I get Island of Fire.Im intrigued about the whole book being about one German Division facing off against one Russian Division.

Operation Citadel: A Text and Photo Album, Vol.1. The South. By: J. Restayn & N. Moller Contains 702 pics and is 460 pages

This is a great book I recently purchased with the best photo collection I've ever seen of the war. It's not cheap but it's worth it.
