IMHO, this is an excellent movie, even though it's quite old (1960s).
It portrays the war how it really was, and it's not infested with that Hollywood crap.
German soldiers, aviators and commanders speak German among themselves, without accent.
It also portrays the chivalry between British and Germans. Very good.
One of the best scenes is when a Polish is shot down and parachutes into an English farm. He is surrounded by English farmers and he replies with his Polish accent: "Good affterrrnoon". He sounded very much like a German!
The Englishman replies: "Good afternoon my ass". The Polish is then arrested!

It was quite good.
I especially like the opening scene in france when the groundcrews have just doused the 'lame duck' hurricanes with gasoline (petrol ) when the Luftwaffe comes over and fires one burst into each plane, setting its ablaze.

Trivia about that scene : it was filmed in the SW corner of Duxford airfield ( the 'chateau' was made of plywood ) and the groundcrew Sergeant who is about to set fire to the aircraft was in reality a decorated Commando from WWII. I met him three years ago and he's still embarrassed that the petrol-soaked rag wouldn't light 'on camera' - watch closely and the scene cuts, cuts back and the rag is alight. His only 'big moment' in the movie and it went wrong....
( The 'Bf109' which streaks over the hill so fast and low was flown by Commandante Pedro Santa Cruz of the Spanish Airforce who amazed the RAF pilots on-set by his fearless handling of the aircraft ).

I just went there saturday and they had abot 20 for sale and I snatched a copy as well as a copy of Is Paris Burning? and a copy of Benedict Arnold--the recent A&E TV movie that played about 2 months ago.
BTW--Is Paris Burning? is somewhat difficult to find. I'd suggest to get a copy soon if you have hopes in finding a copy. I also noticed that a copy of Kelly's Heroes is now raised from $10.00 to $17.00.

Ah yes--the War Lover. I saw it some years ago but was not impressed. It had far less action in the air and more romance action than was necessary.
This is one of the VERY few war movies i'd give two thumbs down on. To me it ranks up there with both versions of the thin red line as well as the Pearl Harbor movie. Pearl harbor would have been great if they had cut out at least 1 hour of the romance crud.

I'll give 'The War Lover' one thing, though - some of the best, most low-level B-17 stunt flying ever on-screen, done by the late Captain John Crewdson...

I agree--the flying scenes were nice but--thats about all I liked from that movie. It was as boring to me as watching Harrison Ford in "Hannover Street."

'Hanover Street' - yuk !
And they flew, what - 4 or 5? - B-25s across the Atlantic to make the film? What a waste of effort !

Well, you guys convinced me. I'm checking Battle of Britain of from the library tonight!!
Incidentily, I own Frank Capra's "battle of britain" from the "Why we fight" propaganda series. The only one I don't have is called, I believe, "the negro soldier". I saw it in class once and it's really interesting, although I don't see myself finding it anywhere.

Oh, and I agree on the war lover. I love the planes, but the story is a little too lovey dovey. Luckily, I like steve mcqueen enough to sit through the movie now and then - it's another we have here at the library.

Martin--I agree with you 100% on that lousy flick.
Sorry CvM--i'd suggest swapping this DVD for another movie or getting your money back. In the last several months--I made a mistake in the purchase of one of the movies I have in my collection.
Geeeeeeeze--I can hardly wait for Where Eagles Dare to be out in September.

On May 24th, the definitive DVD of 'Battle Of Britain' will at last be released in the UK !
As well as the legendary film itself, MGM are promising a bonus disc including trailers, a 'making of' documentary, interviews, alternative soundtrack, etc etc.
I saw several of these items screened at Duxford for the 30th Anniversary in 1999 and this will be well worth adding to any enthusiasts' collection.
Forget Tom Cruise - THIS IS THE ONE !!

Is this series a documentary like a Band of Brothers or like World at War? Is it acted out today or live footage from then is what I mean? Either way I'll probably wind up buying it although I'm now on a strict college budget.
