Re: What have you been watching?
I had always thought a good trivia question would be how many times has John Wayne and Matt Dillon been shot in all their years of movies and TV. Must be 30 or 40 rounds a piece !

Yessir. ;-)) Also, I think AMC is going to have a marathon of his movies for his 100th birthday celebration coming up in just over 28 hours ;-D
There are celebrations going on for his 100th, in his birthplace of Winterset, Iown, in Eager, Arizona, San Diego, Calif, San Bernadino, California, somewhere in Colorado, as well as in Cannes, France, Germany, Ireland, England, Australia and I forget where else. There will be a representative or a Duke family member as well as John Wayne's "stock actors" at every one of these celebrations.

Good trivia question, and i'm not sure of the answer but, I know he was shot twice in El Dorado. Once by a woman in the back because he had shot her younger brother (who was gut-shot and later killed himself)(the actor was Johnny Crawford who played Lucas McCain in The Rifleman) who tried to ambush him. Next he was hit by a stray pellet from Mississippi's sawed-off shotgun when they were in a Saloon trying to find one of three men who had tried to ambush them from an old Church. Mississippi btw, was played by a young James Caan--and did a good job at it.
Duke was shot in the leg by Sheriff gone bad: Hendricks in Rio Lobo (leg wound)
Duke was shot by ambush in a Saloon in The Shootist.
Duke as Sgt Stryker was shot in the back by a Japanese sniper in: The Sands of Iwo Jima.
As Hondo Lane in Hondo, he was stabbed in the chest by an Apache Indian while they were fighting for blood rights.
He was shot by a Cowboy in his waist, in: Red River.
In The Cowboys, he was shot several times (murdered) by: Bruce Dern. And did you know, that Bruce Dern is still hated today because he killed the Duke!
He was shot in several other movies but I would need to watch them all again to give a more accurate accounting of such ;-D
I think he died in 6 or 8 of his movies. Keith, a Gentleman from England, gathered together all that trivia-which is only found at www.dukewayne.com

Island in the Sky is not one of my favorite Duke films either but, it is full of many great actors and actresses. Paul Fix, Claire Trevor (the beautiful blonde and who was billed over John Wayne in the film that made him a star: Stagecoach) Robert Stack, James Arness, Lloyd Nolan and several others.

Watched 'The Black Book' today; the recently released Dutch film. REally recommend it to everyone. It's a thriller set near the end of the war in Holland.

I just watched the Sound of Music again since watching it 12 years ago, I never really realized it's a WWII film. No mp40's though.

Re: What have you been watching?
Thanks for the link Wil.
A bit of info about Dean Smith and Ed Faulkner.
Den Smith is also a Rodeo Star and travels the rodeo circuit and I think he lives here in Texas. IF you want to see who he is, just watch Rio Lobo. He playes the Confederate Soldier named Bidey.
Ed Faulkner is easy to I.D. as well--if your not familiar with him. He was a Yankee Sergeant in Shennandoah w/ James Stewart etc. The scene he was in was where The Boy, and his Negro friend, had just ran quite a distance after watching a small battle. They were trying to drink some water from a pond or river-when a group of yanks came up behind them--taking The Boy into custody--and freeing his friend--whoi in turn-ran and told The Boys family what happened. BTW, James Stewarts role in Shennandoah was originally written for John Wayne-sho turned it down because of other movies he was making. Also, you will see a few others in that movie who were in many of Dukes movies from the 30's to the 70's including: PAul Fix, PAt Wayne, Harry Carey Jr, and some others.
Back to Ed Faulkner, he made his riches investing in real estate and is now a billionnaire. Oh and I almost forgot, if you don't know what he looks like, watch The Green Berets and he is the Colonels aide--rank of Captain.

Re: What have you been watching?
Saw one last night called The Fastest Gun Alive with Glenn Ford and Broderick Crawford. A really good movie! Broderick Crawford plays the bad guy. He was also in the original All The King's Men. I believe sean penn stars in the remake, however, I wouldn't watch him in a dogfood commercial.

Re: What have you been watching?
I just watched the movie on DVD of "The Queen" and I am really puzzled by the reason for her being ? It was interesting in the movie that 10 years ago Tony Blair was really popular. Then he made the mistake of listening to George W.
Overall the movie was kind of dull to me but also interesting if there is any truth to the relationship between the Queen, the PM, and the British people. I guess I need to be raised in Britain to understand it all.
Disclaimer; I am not putting down the Queen or British way of life, it is just I don't understand it from an American view point, but I guess that is why we parted company in the late 1700's.

Re: What have you been watching?
Just watched a 1950's sci-fi called Them starring James Whitmore and James Arness. Both of these guys were WWII veterans. Does anyone know if Arness' brother Peter Graves ("Security" in Stalog 17) served? Also, I've posted this site before and I'm sure many of you have seen it but, for those who haven't..... www.palletmastersworkshop.com/flipside.html
There seems to be some controversy surrounding Charles Bronson's service. Some sites say he was a tail gunner on a bomber in the PTO, others say a nose gunner on a B-29 in the PTO and some say he never left Arizona.
Back to movies.....I sure wouldn't mind seeing Richard Widmark and Gene Tierney in Night and the City again. Widmark plays an ambitious hustler trying to corner the wrestling racket in London. Stanislaus Zbyszko plays Gregorius the Great. I really liked this one!

Speaking of James Arness and the movie Them. Them was OK and thankfully both Whitmore and Arness are still living as well as Arness's bro. Not sure if Graves served or not. I THOUGHT I saw on a website that he did but the site only gave names and no extra info. Anyway, I THINK I saw his name there.
About Arness. You might be happy to know that he came out of retirement to do a new Western film called: Comanchie Stallion. This film was made by Harry Carey Jr, and directed in the John Ford style. This movie also has Robert Carradine and another "big name" besides Arness.
Anyway, the movie was supposed to be released last year but ran into financial troubles but I heard that that is no longer an issue and the movie is back into production. This will be your absolute last chance to see Arness on the screen - in anything new that is.
As for Charles Buchinsky (aka) Charles Bronson, I will go one even further. It was also said that he served in the Navy; in WWII. I don't remember what site I saw that info on.

I would love to watch Dunkirk again. Dammit, they do not show it over here very often. Last time I saw it was about 20 years ago.
Finished watching Colditz, then watched the first 4 episodes of: The Lone Ranger. After that will be the first 4 episoeds of: My Favorite Martain. After that, no telling?
