Default Re: What have you been watching?

I will admit, at first I thought "Oh great, one of these long talkie talkie movies that put you to sleep". And within the first 15 minutes my eyes were glued to the screen. It's not an action flick like many (including me) would anticipate, but it surely makes good on the physcologicaly affects inflicted on the airmen and the pressure the commanders took during the war.

Completely concur with Martin about Twelve O'Clock High. Gregory Peck, Millard Mitchell, Dean Jagger and Gary Merrill, were all most excellent; in this movie. I also have a great 8x10 B&W studio photo of Gregory Peck as Brigadier General Frank Savage wearing his flying gear. Also, this movie is one of my favorites because my father served with the 8th A.F in B-17's as a Ball Turret Gunner.

Forgot to mention, I watched: Santa Fe Trail this morning. This movie stars Errol Flynn as Lt/Capt, J.E.B. Stuart, Ronald Reagan as Lt/Capt, George Armstrong Custer, the beautiful: Olivia de Havilland and Raymond Massey as the Abolitionalist: John Brown.

Fact: Did you know that Raymond Massey played the part of John Brown in four movies that had this character in it?

Willow Run one B-24 every 63 minutes, hoping to see my father in law, he was there before he shipped out to Guam to work on 24s. The file footage from the PBS WWII series is good.

Then maybe Battleground or Go For Broke or They Were Expendable....

I have that movie on DvD. It's been awhile since I last saw it but, I remember it was a decent movie. Anything with Gregory Peck and Roger Moore etc, have my double thunbs up.

Still watching season 2 of: The Andy Griffith Show.

If any of you are fans of the show, right now is the time to start buying it. WalMart selles the first 4 seasons at about $19.95 each. That's a steal.

Well, since I got three packages in yesterday, I will be fist starting off with the watching of The John Wayne 100th Birthday Celebrations in Winterset, Iowa DvD that came in. After that, I will finish watching season 3 of: The Andy Griffith Show. Then I will be watching: Bataan, Back To Bataan w/ Duke, Hell To Eternity, The Fighting 69th w/ James Cagney and Allegheny Uprising w/ Duke. When those are finished, I will be starting to watch: The Winds of War mini-series. In Nov, I will be watching all 12 parts of War and Remembrance. :-D

Miguel can now have the right to call me a Couch Potato. ;-D

Carl, I was in a Super Wally World the other and saw a pack of 20 John Wayne DVD movies for $5 and thought of you. The movies were ones I had not heard of. I'll bet he was just in some them and not the star of the movie.

Hi Jeff, I know of the Duke movies you speak of. Don't buy those as they are crappy copies of whatever movies are on them. These are what they call: Public Domain Movies, which means that anyone can copy them and sell them. The sad thing is, is that none of those who sell these, will spend the money to restore these movies. Also, many of the movies will be some that are so crappy - which I found out when I bought a Western 4 pack - tried to watch and then donated them to the Library.

Anyway, if interested in a good deal on many of Duke's films from the 1930's, go to Best Buy (if one is in your area) and only pick up either the ones listed as Double Feature, or the 16 movie set, that comes in a John Wayne embossed tin box. I have this set and thought these are not restored, but seem to have the best quality of those I have seen. Also, I like that tin box-which is a great Duke collectable. These sets sell for about $16.00 or so bucks.

Im still watching season 3 of: The Andy Griffith Show. Gomer and Goober make their first appearances during this season.

PS: By the way, on those Public Domain movies: Wayne Enterprises is trying to get the rights to those films and are currently fighting it out in Court, against the many companies that are churing out unrestored versions of Duke's early Westerns. These battles will probably go on for years. :-((

I remember watching Battleship Potempkin years ago and recall the side of beef they wanted the sailors to eat that was full of worms and the fool doctor came out and said it was OK to eat !

Of course if I saw what went into sausage I and many others would refuse to eat that also.
