Re: What have you been watching?
A document on Estonian guerilla warfare radists 1941-44 who were trained by Finns for the job. Their job was to spy first the Germans and inform the Finns whether the Germans were leaving the Baltics soon in spring 1944, and later on the Red army movements.
It was called the group Hawk.
Interesting as the Finns were also spying on what the Germans wre up to...

Tobruk tonight.
All Quiet On The Western Front(1979 version) last night
And I'm very excited to finally see Die Bruecke tomorrow night. Though I need to fix the subtitles first. A great big thank you to the creators of Subtitle Edit

Re: What have you been watching?
I saw a great classic called Gung Ho! from 1943 with Robert Mitchum. It deals about the attack of the Island of Makin by U.S. Marine Raiders. it's a great film about the Pacific war that was shot before the war was even over. Obvioulsy some propaganda, but vey nice and the uniforms and material are real of course, even the Zeros and most of al you have great 1942 shots of the damaged and sunk ships at Pearl Harbour. The Arizona is half sunk and the cannon turrets are still above water.

I can't make sense of it. The subtitles appear to be a literal translation from german to english...or perhaps from german to another language and then to english:
Quote:
00:02:33,119--> 00:02:36,611
If, if, they say that he/she has fallen
near the bridge!...
32
00:02:37,176--> 00:02:38,647
Notice you in that...!
33
00:02:42,980--> 00:02:45,862
What the Boss of the Party says
Does he/she plan to leave of trip?
34
00:02:47,473--> 00:02:50,666
Anything of that, Rendoff, we have that
to confront the danger
35
00:02:51,097--> 00:02:52,787
and if there is somebody that attempts
to mine the party...
36
00:02:52,932--> 00:02:54,280
... we will judge it immediately
37
00:02:55,165--> 00:02:56,958
Write down that, Rendoff well!
38
00:03:03,167--> 00:03:04,888
Ema! it Dates hurry!

I don't need perfection, but I can't make any sense of these. Also, they flash on the screen so quick that I don't even have time to read them. This is the only English subtitle file I can find available for download.
Does anyone have a copy of the subtitles containing a better translation?
Very disappointed.
I just realised you may have been asking me about Tobruk, and not Die Bruecke. Thought Tobruk was pretty good. The scenes with the father and daughter are over acted and sometimes just aweful. Other than that though I thought the story and acting was very good especially when compared to some of the other war films of that time and earlier. I'm not very informed as far as the war on that front is concerned so I wasn't watching it for historical accuracy or anything like that.
Tonight will be Ivanovo Detstvo or World At War 25: Reckoning. I have to be in the right mood to watch that particular W.A.W. episode, need to feel completely detached or I end up feeling bad for people who don't deserve much sympathy.

Re: What have you been watching?
Tonight in "more or less" local series documentary:
Scars of war: The Red Army navy losses at Estonia, Tallinn autumn 1941. Some 16,000 dead while ships were sunk ( mines, torpedo boats, stukas ) when the Soviets were trying to escape from Tallinn. Footage on wrecks from the bottom of the ocean, people who were there telling their story etc.
Also intending to go and see the the new Indiana Jones movie tonight...

Re: What have you been watching?
Will be finishing Hitler: The Last Ten Days-this evening, and then starting on Season 1 of: Justice League America, animated TV series. After that, I will be watching the entire run of the 1 season-lived TV series: The Voyagers. And hopefully not too long after that, I will be starting to watch all six seasons of: COMBAT ;-D

I have not thought about, nor seen, this movie for probably the better part of 30 years! The last time I can remember watching this movie, was when our local PBS Station broadcast it at 6 PM on a Saturday night. And the main reason I watched it, was because I wanted to see Robert Mitchum. If im not mistaken? I think Western movies actor, Randolph Scott, played the Commanding officer of those Raiders. Also, if im not mistaken, I THINK Robert Mitchum gets killed by a Japanese Sniper????
A bit of trivia about this movie. The movies title "Gung Ho" is Chinese for: "Work Together."
I think this movie is out on DvD-but is one of those what they call: "Public Domaine" movies and will NOT have be restrored and WILL be a crappy copy that will be on DvD. I sure wish that the AFI or some Org like that, could sue in the Courts, to get the rights to this movie and restore it.
Forgot to mention: I Started watching Season 1 of: Justice League America-last night. As our friends from the U.K. might say: "Jolly good show--Wot!" ;-D

Wow! I have a copy of the JLA, too. What I really want is to get my hands on the 1970s version of the JLA cartoons. These may not be as good as the JLA series today but I did enjoy them as a kid.
As for Gung Ho, I've seen this movie once when my Dad rented it for his betamax machine several years ago. I think I might have enjoyed it but I only have a fuzzy recollection of the movie.
I just saw Victory in the Pacific on the National Geographic Channel the other night, then Bridge on the River Kwai last night and Battlestar Galactica (I think the last two episodes of Season II).
