That's the one ! Whatever, it's fabulous value - it makes you realise that UK TV companies just don't have the budgets to make this sort of thing any more. A classic production.....

I haven't seen it...yet! That surprises me. I often turn into the BBC because of their productions, which I think out-do all European one (Exceptions confirm the rule of course)...
I did see an interesting series on Germany recently, a dramatisation of the fate of a British crew shot down on the Dresden raid...

"Burnt by the sun"
The film takes place in 1936 Russia, nineteen years after the Communist Revolution and well into Stalin's reign of terror. We are introduced to Colonel Serguei Kotov (Nikita Mikhalkov), hero of the Revolution, and his family.
It´s a nice summer day, and into their lives walks a young man, who now works for the secret service. In the end he takes Sergei Kotov to Moscow to be shot after interrogation ( already decided by Stalin ), but first he enjoys the company of the people he once knew.
A nice movie, maybe a bit slow in the beginning but since I have not seen many movies on life in the USSR in the 1930´s just watching the people live is quite interesting.

Come and See
http://movies2.nytimes.com/gst/movie...tml?v_id=10400
A re-release on DVD from 1985: Come and See is based on the real-life experiences of Ales Adamovich, who fought with Russian partisans in Belarus in 1943, when the Nazis systematically torched over 600 villages and slaughtered their inhabitants. Adamovich and director Elem Klimov co-authored the screenplay, which shows the horrors through the eyes of a 13-year-old peasant boy named Florya.

I have been watching a series on TV here in the UK called (The War of the World) about the 20th century history. The presenter who is also a professor concluded that the only winner of WW2 was Russia, I would like to point out he is making a study of the west and east, so it's a deep subject matter. Anyone else in the U.K. has been watching this one?

Watched when I could Pike, sorry Richard . Haven't seen the whole thing and must catch-up with the re-runs. Very enjoyable and nice to see many points mentioned which usually are overlooked for the thumbnail classics.

No.9, the series is well worth watching when they repeat it.

Col hessler,
did not notice your question earlier, sorry about that.
The movie lasts some 2hrs 20 mins. The first hour is a bit dream-like symbolism but the second hour describes how a village was destroyed and the people burnt inside the local church. Overall I think they got the right perspective and actually it is not too much the usual anti-nazi stuff but showing how awful it all was in its "purest self".
The film was done in 1985 so I´m even more surprised that it´s so documentary-like. This was how it probably happened...singing, dancing, drinking alcohol, killing people...

On June 17th 1943, President Roosevelt wrote to Prime Minister Churchill; “I am fed up with de Gaulle, there is no possibility of working with him. We must divorce ourselves from de Gaulle because he has proven unreliable, uncooperative and disloyal to both our governments.”

"Allies at war" a very interesting 2 hour documentary on FDR, Churchill and de Gaulle. It seems they fought more against each other than Hitler....

Watched The Downfall again last night, this time on T.V.
Fascinating film, great performance by Bruno Ganz as Hitler.
Some memorable Quotes from the film........
Reichsführer SS Heinrich Himmler: When I meet Eisenhower, should I give the Nazi salute, or shake his hand?
Joseph Goebbels: I feel no sympathy. I repeat, I feel no sympathy! The German people chose their fate. That may surprise some people. Don't fool yourself. We didn't force the German people. They gave us a mandate, and now their little throats are being cut!
Adolf Hitler: In a war as such there are no civilians.
Adolf Hitler: General Von Greim, I appoint you supreme commander of the Luftwaffe. I hereby promote you to General-Fieldmarshall. A big responsibility rests on your shoulders. You have to rebuild the Luftwaffe from scratch. Many mistakes have been made. Be ruthless. Life doesn't forgive weakness. This so-called humanity is religious drivel. Compassion is an eternal sin. To feel compassion for the weak is a betrayal of nature. The strong can only triumph if the weak are exterminated. Being loyal to this law, I've never had compassion. I've always been ruthless when faced with internal opposition from other races. That's the only way to deal with it.

I just watched A Bridge Too Far yet again. It was shown in the US on the AMC channel, which has been a great channel for WWII films for the past few years.

I couldn't help but laugh at the fact that Audie's field uniform in the movie always looked like it had just been pressed. What a guy though. Anyone ever read his book by the same title as the movie?
