So far tonight I have watched the documentaries, "Desert Rats", Victoria Cross Heroes, Weapons of ww2 (focusing on infantry support weapons), and Hero Ships. I don't think that I ahve watched that many in one go before. Suprisingly they were not to bad, they were realistic and factual although I did notice that they used some frames from ww2 movies to display the battles they were talking about.

Forgot to mention that I watched Jeffrey Hunter in: Hell To Eternity. A most excellent film about Guy Gabaldon.

Tonight will be: Merrills Marauders with: Jeff Chandler, Claude Akins, Andrew Duggan and Ty HArdin. Another great film. Tomorrow will be the start of season 4 of Daniel Boone.

Krieg, Hondo is a great choice and is one of my all-time most favorite Westerns. It has a great cast, and including Duke, it has: James Arness, Ward Bond (Army Scout: Buffalo Baker), Paul Fix (Cavalry Major) Geraldine Page (Mrs. Lowe) and Michael Pate as Apache Indian Chief: Vittorio.

Just watched an episode on Disc one of season Nr 4 of: Daniel Boone. This one had Neville Brand as it's guest star. This was an excellent episode.

Did anyone else catch a documentary last night on UK television, most probably already aired in US, about aircraft carrier prepared, and taken off Florida coast, sunk by explosives to create a nature reef and diving experience. Ive seen it done with frigates and destroyers in UK on a much smaller scale, but this was fascinting, gave history of ship, I wont even try spelling it, was first post war carrier, served in Korean and Vietnamese waters. Suffered fatalaties in a fire at one stage.
Just the work spent in demobilising it, making sure it was eco friendly, placing the explosives etc, cameras, USN involved in it all the way. The towing to its final resting place was an adventure on its own, with cables snapping and tug virtually smashing into the hulk.
But as with all ships, it was sad to see her going down, the cameras showing the inrush of water onto lift decks etc was a great piece of film work.
Impressive.

Yes. I saw it on Discovery Channel last year. "Sinking of an Aircraft Carrier" or something similar was the title of the show. The guys did a good job in cleaning up the toxic hazards from the carrier before it was sank. A ship of that size will surely be a boon for the fish and other sea life in that area.

I just saw Downfall. Pretty good movie.

Hi Urgh, the Aircraft Carrier in question was moored in the waters not far from the CC Museum of Science and History-where I volunteered at for over two years. Anyway, some of us at the Museum got to go tour it a few times while it was having everything salvaged that was worth anything.

I bet here is a little fact that is not widely known. Did you know that some parts used in this Aircraft carrier-and as I suspect, all of those built during WWII, that some of it's parts were made out of Gold.

I was there when they had salvaged all the gold and had had it placed under guard. I don't know how much gold was there nor do not know it's value but, there was a sizable amount sitting there under a grey tarpolin waiting to be picked up and shipped.

Carl, even when they had salvaged all they could, it was still an eerie site when they did one final camera tour before towing her out. Still had dental chairs, captains chair all that sort of stuff. Im sure any vets who served on her would have been saddened as they saw her slip away. And final scenes were of divers swimming through her hatches, amazing stuff.

Hi Urgh, yep, I saw those Dental Chairs in person and it was an eerie site when we got to go into the bowels of the ship. I remember that some of the spaces we saw, which if I recall, they were the secondary blast hulls of the ship, that it just gave you an eerie feeling to be there.

I never got the chance to go on the bridge though, and we were not allowed to take photo's-or I would have probably taken several rolls of film when going there. As for the Gold on board, they had four armed Port of Corpus Christi Policemen standing next to the covered "mound" on the floor. What's funny was that that reminded me of that scene in Kellys Heroes where they first get to that bank and see all the boxes covered in tarp lying on the floor.

You would have been amazed to see the piles of wiring that they had stashed everywhere. They also seperated the metals by having copper in one area, tin in another bronze in another, brass etc etc.

I saw the video when they sank this ship and agree, it was amazing. I have always had an interest in getting into Diving but, never got around to it. If I ever do, the USS Oriskeny is going to be one site i'll go to.

I forgot to mention that I was lucky to be one of those who got to collect some artifacts from the ship, identify them, classify them and log them into the Museums collection. Some of the stuff would look like junk to the average person but, to us, it was a gold mine.

Carl, when they eventually scrapped the Ark Royal over here our last great carrier if you dont count the Hermes, virtually every sailor who had served on her managed to get a momento from the thing. Dont know who ended up with the Phantom fighters but good luck to em. I know we cannot turn every ship into a museum, but its a shame we cant, too much history dispears in the scrapyard.

Hi Urgh, I agree with you in that it is sad to see historical ships made into scrap, the Ark Royal deserved a better fate. About 60 or so years ago, the USS Texas, was just barely saved from being turned into scrap, by school children in Texas. My Mother, who was one who led a "Penny Drive" in Houston, Texas. I don't know how long it took to collect enough money to buy the ship but, it was eventually collected and the ship was saved for Posterity. I got to go on a tour of the USS Texas many years ago. Would love to go back and tour it again.

It had its moments, mostly (as you pointed out) for the bomber formations. the conflagration scenes were of interest too.
