Cool

This movie stars Burt Lancaster, Wolfgang Priess and Richard Munch. I have only seen maybe 30 minutes of the movie and thought it was a decent war movie.

What's your thoughts Gents?

I like this film a lot - it was directed by John Frankenheimer in the '60s when a lot of steam trains were being scrapped, and so they didn't mind the film crew wrecking them ! There are some really stunning scenes, especially the Allied air attack on Vaire, and the 'friendly' Spitfire strafing the train....

Jeanne Moreau has a cameo role, and Shakespearian actor Paul Schofield plays the obsessive German officer ( 'Where is my train !? ' ) very memorably.

One of my black-and-white favourites !

Martin, thank you for your reply. I KNEW someone here had to see this movie. I have only seen the last 20 minutes or so of the movie.

Today, I just got it on DVD along with The Sea Wolves, from a Video/music store here locally, that will be going out of business by the end of January.

I paid $4.00 each, brand new never been opened. I could not pass that bargain up.

It has been a long time but I did see this. Wasn't Burt Lancaster some kind of French engineer that was asked to help transport some valuable art by the French Resistance and then delay or reroute the train? I was surprised at Lancaster being casted in this role. It just did not seem like his fit.

Hi Ike, you are quite correct.

I watched this movie last night and I did enjoy it--though it was irritating to see that most of the Germans seemed to be so incompetent. The uniforms etc were all good. For the usage or real items--including the trains that were destroyed, I have to give the film an A and not an A+ because of the dimwitting of the German soldiers.

I thought just before the RK Oberst was killed by Burt--the scene where he was ordering that battle-tested Major to load his trucks with the art, was a nice added touch.
