I'm a little disappointed with the History Channel these days. There are some very good programs, but I've recently seen shows covering the Twinkie, some program about furniture and most recently a show about Salt! I mean seriously a show about Salt, how far they have fallen! Does anyone else in the US see this trend of the History Channel going to the dogs, or is it just me?

Compared to the quality programming on canada's History Television I'm even more dissappointed with The US versions. Does anyone else who has access to both networks think one is better than the other?

I don't get History Television but I do agree with you on the History Channel. They really bend the facts alot in order to make something more interesting than it really was so you will watch the show. Some things they just omit like a show I watched about a Hurricane fighter ramming a Do-17 bomber. They said the Do-17 had a pilot only and did not mention there are other crew members on a german bomber. They also said the bomber was going to bomb Buckingham Palace but then it said the bomber only had one engine and was going home. Might as well watch wrestling instead of the garbage they have been turning out.

And in fact, when the Do17 was rammed there was no-one aboard - the crew had baled out after a previous attack.

There's no way Sgt Ray Holmes could have known that - but the Schmistory Channel should have.

Thanks for the information Martin. I could not remember Sgt Holmes name last night.

and what's wrong with salt ?

yes quite correct the History channel has been covering some strange schmukey items of late....every time a piece of Ww 2 news comes on I'll watch for a mere 5 minutes and then change channels as they have goofed up reality in such a huge way that I get sick to my stomach....pull out the old news reels for me anytime

I feel compelled, as a student of history, to point out some things about salt and history. I would find a show on the history of salt fascinating. Do you realize that salt has had an historical impact of real significance? Much more so than say, the Sherman tank, or blitzkrieg, or a British Mosquito, or the Battle of Stalingrad. Do you earn a salary? The word salary comes from the Latin word Salarium, which comes from the Latin for salt. Roman legionairies were paid a "salarium" as part of their pay. This was a pre-determined amount of salt. My point is that salt was much more important to the people of antiquity than most people realize.

The above example is a minor episode in the story of salt in history. Salt played major roles throughout the history of mankind.

Indeed! I saw a documentary about salt here on Swedish television, and it was absolutely fascinating stuff, the way salt was of the top-three-or-so strategic resource for hundreds of years. Salt was, of course, one of the few alternatives when it came to storing food for prolonged periods of time, and as such vitally important to many countries.

More shows on salt I say!

Sounds like FramerT has the right idea for you guys. I just noticed last night that I have the Military Channel. Much more specialized programming that I think you all would like.

I have not yet seen the Military Channel, but it seems promising considering the state of the History Channel these days.

As a follow up to the salt issue, I need to make an addendum. A program on actual salt would have indeed been quite interesting, but the program was on salt mines. Granted a salt mine might have a few intresting points, even a few tales about plundered nazi gold and art, but this show was not the best I've seen on the History Channel, not by a long shot.

At least the history Channel does shows about history. You should watch the Discovery Channel........shows about motorcycles????? What happened to all the crocodiles eating the zebras and Lions chasing down gazelles.???? I really enjoyed that stuff. They can take that Harley Davidson crap out to the corn field.!!!

well you guys know, the History channel needs to appeal to the modern public. all that dandy stuff about people pleasing. the channel is definetly going downhill even with the stuff they do show.
