There is a film in production at the moment called Atonement, they have recently been filming the Dunkirk evacuation scenes at Redvar beach near to me and my son as well as other re-enactors was amongst the 1000 extras they had for british and rench troops. we have some excellant photo's of the 3 days filming.

Lightbulb Re: Atonement

Saw this movie on Friday.

It cannot be called a 'WWII movie' ; it's more a romance in which WWII ( the Dunkirk evacuation ) plays a part.

It's a very good film and well-worth seeing but the Dunkirk scenes seemed very artificial - a little like a cross between 'Gallipoli' and 'Apocalypse Now'. Part of this can be explained by the central character semi-hallucinating due to wounds, but the other soldiers seem unreal and the equipment, trucks etc all looks in 'showroom' condition. Even my wife ( no WWII buff ) thought that the Dunkirk scenes were the unconvincing and that the 'Corporal' character overacts terribly.

Oh - and an Avro Lancaster flies overhead ; in a scene taking place in 1935.....

The Lanc as a secret weapon before the war even started! That would be a great "what if"!

Unhappy Re: Atonement

Too bad they did not make this one like the older version of the movie by the same name. I love the older "Dunkirk" movie which had some great actors such as my all-time most favorite from the UK: Sir John Mills.

One wonders whay the hell the Sir John Mills movie, has not been released on DvD yet?

Thumbs up Re: Atonement

I quite agree, Carl....despite those 1950s black-and-white British war films now being sneered at for being 'stiff upper-lip' I couldn't help thinking that Dunkirk was far more accurately portrayed in the older movie......

Hi Martin, I love those old British classics. I sure wish we got more of those released over here. ;-)) Im very surprised that movies like: The Desert Rats, The Colditz Story, The Battle of Britain, 633 Squadron and The Dambusters; are shown here. I wonder if maybe we all could sign some sort of petition, and then send it to Robert Osbourne (the host of movies at TCM) and maybe something could happen???? It's a nice thought anyway. Also, I haven't seen: Pursuit of the Graf Spee, in I don't know how many years!

Perfectly righ twe often see the same classics and others are never showed. However I don't know if a petition by a score of WWII buffs would make a diffrence. The ones we see here are the Longest Day, The Battle of Britain , a Bridge too far, is Paris Burning etc... good films I must admit but others are worth seeing too.
