Re: "The Pacific" follow up to Band of Brothers
I just finished "Helmet for My Pillow" by Robert Leckie, and read "With the Old Breed" by sledge a few months ago. Writing styles are different for both Marines. Leckie being a professional writer and all. Sledges book tends to be more graphic, while Leckie is a bit more poetic. I like to see how they tie the two stories together. The story of MOH winner John Basalone also gets thrown into the mix. Hopefully they do a good job adding his story into it.

Re: "The Pacific" follow up to Band of Brothers
A local shop refurbished some Higgins that were to be used in the show. They also have a T-34 mocked up as a Tiger that is to be overhauled. It has some Hollywood history to it, alledgedly used in S.P.R. or B.O.B., but i'm not positive. Someday i'll stop & take some pics & upload them.

Sounds awesome. The shooting (of the film) will be a bit far away from my home this time...

Re: "The Pacific" follow up to Band of Brothers
I have read both books, Leckie's is somewhat critical of the Marine Corps and he had a lot of trouble dealing with the officer class.
This promises to be very interesting

Re: "The Pacific" follow up to Band of Brothers
My understanding is that filming is completed, there are, like Band of Brothers no big name actors in the cast, the most well know is probably William Sadler playing Chesty Puller, All three main leads (playing Leckie, Sledge and Basilone) are relative unknowns.
Rather interestingly Leckie is a fairly famous author and historian, yet his book, which avoids using surnames and refers to everyone by nicknames such as "Chuckler" etc seems almost an anti-war book like Catch 22, without the humour and Sledges is very grim, yet Basilone's story is very heroic, should be interesting to see how they tie it all together into one narrative.

I can't wait to see more about the life of John Basilone. He's one of my personal favorites in history.

I'm waiting very patiently for "The Pacific". I have no doubts it'll be as good as Band of Brothers.

First off, for all interested, here is a fan site with video clips. If you look at some of the pictures taken, you'll see that we have moved far beyond casting of this movie and theyve actually pretty much finished filming! So no Christian Bale.
Wikipedia already had this entered way back in July, via IMDB.com. Heres what those two reported, and Im happy to say that it seems as if theyre NOT going with a big time actor like Christian Bale. i like him and all, but these things are so much better when they dont use a bunch of big time muckity mucks....Anyway, heres what i had on my blog " Ostenfeld' a while back.
The Pacific is a World War II television drama mini-series, produced by HBO, which is currently in development. It is the successor to Band of Brothers. Whereas Band of Brothers focused on United States involvement in the European Theater of Operations, the new series will be about the Pacific Theater of Operations. The Pacific will not be associated with any of the characters from Band of Brothers and is to be based primarily on two memoirs of U.S. Marines: With the Old Breed by Eugene Sledge and Helmet for My Pillow by Robert Leckie. The series will tell the stories of the two authors and Marine John Basilone, as the war against the Empire of Japan rages.
The Pacific is being spearheaded by Bruce McKenna, who was one of the main writers on Band of Brothers. Hugh Ambrose, the son of Band of Brothers author Stephen Ambrose, will serve as a project consultant. Production
Production of the series started in August 2007, in Australia. Filming locations will include in and around Port Douglas, Queensland and both Melbourne and rural Victoria. [3] The series has a budget of more than US$200 million and the series is thought to be the most expensive ever made in Australia. While the producers – HBO, Playtone and Dreamworks – have not made an official comment about The Pacific, they have set up a production office in Melbourne and commenced casting. The Seven Network will also help out with the production. [4]
Storyline
The Pacific will draw on several sources of material, including Eugene Sledge's With the Old Breed and Robert Leckie's Helmet for My Pillow.
Hugh Ambrose, son of the late historian Stephen Ambrose, will serve as a consultant on the project; Stephen Ambrose's book of the same name was the source material for Band of Brothers.
The Pacific follows the stories of the two authors, as well as that of fellow Marine John Basilone, as they fight against Japan across the Pacific.
Given the literary sources mentioned above, the series will feature well-known battles involving the 1st Marine Division, such as Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, and Okinawa, as well as Basilone's involvement in the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Stephen Spielberg and Tom Hanks are making it. So that means it should be pretty good.
