'come and see' by Elim Klimov is superb.
A touch arty around the edges but a fascinating and hugely grim account of one boys accelerated growing up in a Nazi created hell. Hugely grim but I found it magnificent.
(and live ammunition, including artillery, in many scenes too)
Cheers,
Adam.

I found 'Cross of Iron' to be quite a terrible film actually. Is this 'Come and See' in Russian?

'Cross Of Iron' is a must-see if you're into Sam Peckinpah's films, but as a portrayal of the Eastern Front I'd agree that it's not ideal....

The German made "Stalingrad" is an interesting film. It does a good job of portraying the despair of a dying army.

Yep, with a fair dose of gutteral German too.
There is the option of watching with English dubbing turned on but I usually stick to subtitles for foreign films.
I also am glad that nobody has mentioned Enema at the Gates.
Cheers,
Adam.

The German Stalingrad movie is quite good, there's a very good T-34 scene. I'm not sure if it's accurate, there is much pathos, but I really liked it overall, and many combat scenes are quite on par with the way I represent fighting in Stalingrad.
I liked Cross of Iron also.

IMO, I thought Enemy at the Gates showed too much attention to the opposing snipers than to the actual battle.

Stalingrad: Dogs do you want to live forever? Stalingrad was a remake of this film.
One that Kai will hav eto help me on is called something like: Talvisota? which I think is a Finnish film.

Isn't there a movie called Liberation? or w.e? Its on youtube
Its about Kursk. Looks pretty cool and sortv'e accurate cept the Tigers and Panthers are remnants of T-34sand t-55s?? But atleast they make them look like the tanks not like the m-47 deal.

Re: Eastern Front Films...
In terms of Russian films, Zvezda is good (both the old one and the new one), Come and See is good but harrowing, I've got a few random ones without subtitles that are pretty good too, cost £3 in a St Petersburg market LOL.

Re: Eastern Front Films...
The movie Liberation (The one about the battle of Kursk ) is available at Belle and Blade. A bit pricey but it is very rare and about 10 hours

Good clips, Hawkerace! Thanks for sharing!
It looks very interesting, though I'm the musicalisation (and the music) are awful... What does the Dracula-like church organ has to do with the battle?
I loved the T-34s rolling at full speed! WOW!

Re: Eastern Front Films...
Well, it is some cheap copy of Shostákovich's 7th symphony (composed at Leningrad, during the siege)... it's suppossed to add some kind of combat anguish, which it doesn't... only accomplishes some caothic tones here and there. The martial trumpets are a common-place, and the organ is simply out of order... The music should add emotion, be the conducting line of the images, but instead it annoys you...
The Battle of Britain, there you have a magnificent combat score (composed by Sir William Walton and Ron Goodwin)!
