The 300
I know this isn't WWII related, but I didn't kmow where else to post it.
I saw The 300 recently and thought it was absolutely great. I was a little bit of a charicature of the event, but I thought it was cinematically amazing. Did anyone else like it?

Re: The 300
I did get the opportunity to watch the movie and enjoyed it... Though I must say the original, which if im not mistaken was actually German movie called 300 Spartans is the better of the two... My opinion at least.

I saw "Go Tell the Spartans" with Burt Lancaster. I assume it's not quite the same thing

Re: The 300
At this point I only saw the ad, and it looked entertaining. I will probably go and see it. As long as you are not looking for something historic, you may like this version. By the way, Iran considered this movie as a declaration of war by Holywood.

Re: The 300
Tell that to Herodotus
Call me ignorant, but this film doesn't have much to do with History, does it, judging by this?

2nd round!
I'm inclined to give the point to Iran in this case, the film is murder!
These are Kings Xerxes and Leonidas. Guess which is Xerxes?
Quote:
Since its opening, 300 has attracted controversy over its portrayal of ancient Persians. Various critics, experts, journalists, and officials of the Iranian government including President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad have denounced the film. As in the graphic novel, the Persians are depicted as a barbaric and demonic horde, and King Xerxes is portrayed as androgynous. Critics have suggested that this is meant to stand in stark contrast to the masculinity of the Spartan army.
Film critic Dimitris Danikas has suggested that the film portrays Persians as "bloodthirsty, underdeveloped zombies," writing that the filmmakers "are stroking [sic] racist instincts in Europe and America."[71] American critics, including Steven Rea, have argued that the Persians are a vehicle for an anachronistic cross-section of Western stereotypes of Asian and African cultures. Dana Stevens of Slate states that as the "bad" side the Persians are depicted as black people, brown people, homosexual, handicapped and/or deformed in some way.
The film's portrayal of ancient Persians sparked a particularly strong reaction in Iran. Azadeh Moaveni of Time reports that Tehranis were "outraged" following the film's release. Moaveni identifies two factors which may have contributed to the intense reaction: its release on the eve of Norouz, the Persian New Year, and a common Iranian view of the Achaemenid Empire as "a particularly noble page in their history." Various Iranian officials, including the president of Iran's Art Affairs Advisory, Javad Shamqadri, government spokesman Gholam Hossein Elham and four Iranian Members of Parliament condemned the film. The Iranian Academy of the Arts submitted a formal complaint against the movie to UNESCO, labelling it an attack on the historical identity of Iran. The Iranian mission to the U.N. protested the film in a press release, and the Iranian embassies protested its screening in France and Thailand.
A Warner Bros. spokesman said: "The film 300 is a work of fiction inspired by the Frank Miller graphic novel and loosely based on a historical event. The studio developed this film purely as a fictional work with the sole purpose of entertaining audiences; it is not meant to disparage an ethnicity or culture or make any sort of political statement."

Yeah, right.

Re: The 300
At no point does the movie pretend to be an historically accurate movie. Its based on a Graphic-Novel - that sort of thing relies on imagery so of course depicts things rather extremely.
Cinematically, i think the movie is amazing! The Spartans almost come across as Homo's themselves, to be honest. Thats the feel i got. But thats besides the point. The way the movie was shot is just awesome. I love films like that.
PATHFINDER looks similar in the way it has been filmed too, cant wait till it comes out.

I didn't particularly care for that movie. I'm no expert on the subject but I don't think it did justice to the MAAG advisors in Vietnam.

Re: The 300
I have not seen the film yet but read that the actors just played in front of a blank blue background and a computer added all the background later on and merged it with the actors. They also said it was not really historicaly accurate but a good story of how it could have happened.
I also read that they could not marry until they were approx. 30 years old or visit women unless on the sly.

Re: The 300
I saw some promotional footage and did'nt like the weird unatural colors, looks the same as Sin City which I found a awful movie.
Making a movie out of such a miserable subculture as comics can do no good (joking here - I just love to say "miserable subculture" as often as possible I have nothing against comics).
Anyway, I don't know if the Persians are pictured as androgynous, but Spartan are the one fighting in short skirts !
I hope the actors had all their belongings tightly kept in place while moving jumping and stunting around, otherwise the combat scenes might just be...curious LOL
@Za : I guess the Persian king is the obviously fanatic islamist with the usual beard.

You'd better have nothing against fils-from-comics, for your film based on "Astérix et Cléopatre" was something out of the ordinary

I hope not, the battle happened centuries before the appearance of Islam.

Re: The 300
@ Za : please don't mix up things, Astérix & Cléopatre is a very accurate historical movie, scripted upon antique writings
@ Stefan : I'm not sure, it might be a kind of trick to fool the enemy !

Re: The 300
One thing is for sure. Spartians were used to live with the minimum. All they needed was something to eat and to drink, not even a roof as they could sleep anywhere. They also cherished their weapons. All the rest was not needed, so when I see them with jewels and useless decorations, they are actually anything but Spartians. Yet, I told you it seems entertaining, like a cartoon.

Re: The 300
I dont recall seeing them with jewels. And while it might be true that the Hoplite/Warrior Spartans could live like that when on the war path, i'm pretty sure when at home they lived under roofs and with some material items. I highly doubt they lived in a 'caveman'-like existance.
The guy in the picture (a few posts above) is the King of the Persians. He is supposed to be a demi-god, which is why he is about 10-feet tall compared to everyone else. The other person pictured is the Spartan King, who is a pretty big guy himself.

I especially enjoyed the part where every spartan had an 8 pack.

Re: The 300
I saw this film. At first I didn't like it. It was because I thought it was based on the history of Thermopylae. Then I was told it was based on a comic book. So then I thought, ok, it was a decent movie.
The 12 foot tall Xerxes was a bit of a stretch, and for the life of me I can't figure out why on earth they would cast people who were obviously African or of African descent to play Persians. That was disconcerting. I can see how the Iranians might be upset over the African thing and the truly freaky way Xerxes was portrayed but hey, they've got to consider it was based on a comic strip too.
And, the Persian Empires of Darius and Xerxes and so forth were not the most noble in the world so they need to take a chill pill.

Indeed, I wonder if they spotted the irony of complaining about being portrayed as an 'ignorant people' the day before they took our sailors prisoner...
