A Bridge Too Far
In the movie did the allies use air support to attack German armor on one of the bridges?

Re: A Bridge Too Far
No - apart from the actual parachute drop, aviation is only seen for the photo-recon scene and for the 'Typhoon' attack on Valkenswaard where 30 Corps' tanks run into trouble soon after leaving the jumping-off point at Joe's Bridge......

Re: A Bridge Too Far
That's what I thought. Couldn't imagine that I slept through that part. Interesting the DVD case cover shows an air attach on German armor as they approach the end of a bridge. Rather odd.

Sounds rather like 'artistic licence'.....

Re: A Bridge Too Far
It's not unheard of to have historically incorrect covers on DVDs or even books for that matter. I just bought a Korean War book about a certain battle and the troopers on the cover are from a unit that didn't even take part in the battle.

Re: A Bridge Too Far
Isn't there an argument over a Harry Potter movieposter too?

Rather strange code or lack of code to follow. Perhaps they are targeting the "wow" factor.
As for the Harry Potter movie poster, I can't help with that one.

Whiteflight, funny you should mention this movie and that very scene. I bought several years ago, several actual cells from that scene. Been awhile since I last looked at them.

Okay I'm confused. That very scene I mentioned is on the DVD cover. Through this thread we've determined it didn't happen. Have you seend a version that includes it? What do you mean actual cells?

Sorry if confusion was caused but, it was the scene in which Martin Bull was talking about--which was the scene you described.

Re: A Bridge Too Far
It would have been odd because, although no-one would say the film is perfect, the makers did try to stick reasonably close to the real events - and there were no fighter-bomber attacks near any of the bridges.
( Although it would have ben interesting to see the Fw 190 fly into the Church tower near the Arnhem road bridge.... )

Re: A Bridge Too Far
A combination of two scenes for Drama/Wow/sales.
The fighter bombers in the movie attacked the anti-tank gun positions that ambushed 30 Corp on the road, (the wide part). Whether they did or not...I don't know.
The other scene is of Arnhiem (sp) bridge, and the first counter attack by German armor, which was repulsed by the paratroopers...alone.

Re: A Bridge Too Far
Because trying to find a WWII German tank in running order in 1976 was virtually impossible.

Re: A Bridge Too Far
Whereas these days, particularly in the UK, it seems to be getting easier and easier.

At least 3 Panthers currently slated for full running restoration, a possible Bergepanther, a king Tiger, some rumours of another Jagdpanther and a few more Panzer IVs seemingly imported over the last year or so.
Keep 'em rolling!
Cheers,
Adam.

Thank God for our Cousins across the pond. Yes, keep 'em rolling! It does seem like a majority of companies retrieving pzkfws from Russia are based out of the UK.

Re: A Bridge Too Far
Well, I've just re-watched it and I've come to the conclusion that it's the best war film I've ever seen: it's got an impressive cast, nice and relatively artistic photography, no silly sense of humour, an ethical anti-war statement (no 'glory' bollocks), good music, as accurate as a film can get... I really enjoyed it!

It's a good movie, but I couldn't go that far with my accolades. I would have a hard time claiming any one movie as my favorite. I like different movies for different reasons and ABTF ranks up there pretty high.
