Question Valkyrie and Bryan Singer

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0985699/

Based on actual events, a plot to assassinate Hitler is unfurled during the height of WWII.

Out in 2008 with Tom Cruise in it??

Kenneth Branagh will star with Tom Cruise in "Valkyrie," the Bryan Singer-directed WWII drama that shoots this summer for United Artists. Branagh will play a German general who mentors Cruise's character and hatches a plan to assassinate Hitler. Christopher McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander scripted, based on a true story.

Tom playing Stauffenberg perhaps...???? ( hope not!)

Carl G. E. von Mannerheim will become famous soon enough
Default Re: Valkyrie and Bryan Singer

Tom is playing Stauffenberg, and the production has hit a snag, as the german government will not allow filming on the historical sites because Cruise is a scientologist....

Yeah, I cannot see Cruise as von Stauffenburg. He is too short and personally never did like his acting. The snag though is against scientology and cruise's profession to that cult.

This movie should be told by Germans not Americans. It is kind of like having a German actor play Patton, It just would not work. Plus I would hate to see this as a typical Cruz Action Movie vs. the story telling Drama it should be (Like Letters)
This is the German actor who should play Stauffengerg (Thomas Kretchmann)

Shot at 2007-07-08
Vs. the real deal (I think it would be a respectful portrayal)

Good point. Kretchmann portrayed Fegelein in 'Downfall' and I thought did a good job - and the interview with him on the special-edition DVD is worth seeing, too......

I agree also, but the fact remains that they have had 63 years to make a film on this part of history and they have not, at least to my knowledge. Does anyone know of a film dedicated specifically to the July plot?

Having Tom Cruise in a lead role will lessen the likelyhood of me seeing this movie, unless it is offered in such a way that I will not have to cough up hard earned cash to see it.

Perhaps because of the sensitivity of the subject (the war). Now, we are seeing more movies from Germany as well as Italy and the quality of acting and plots are superb (IMO). I know there was a movie about the plot but I think it may have been a History Channel type of documentary???? I will search into the cobwebbed memory banks of my brain and see If I can pull out a name.

Perhaps so. I could not argue one way or the other regarding the motivation or the lack thereof, for making movies of the war by the losing side. I do hope that more movies of value will be made by the Germans, Italians, etc and that they will be available in the US. It is good to see things from the other's viewpoint. Makes me wonder if they will show Allied troops in the same automaton fashion that Hollywood (and other countries' film makers) has been guilty of.
History Channel, I was thinking more along the lines of a theatical release, not documentaries. I would be less then surprised if those had been made.

What I do like about the foreign movies is that they are not afraid of being realistic and show war for what it is whereas American movies tend to be 'Hollywoodish' and geared more for entertainment rather than dramatic and accurate.

I still cannot recall the name but after some thought I think it was a part of a movie (a good portion of it though) and not solely about the 20 July attempt so I guess there is no movie with 20 July as the sole plot. I hope they do not make it into a 'Pearl Harbor' and detract from the historical aspect.

Well, it wouldn't have to be the sole plot but at least be a significant part of the movie.

Lightbulb Re: Valkyrie and Bryan Singer

Not the movie PzJgr is referring to, but the July Plot is obliquely hinted at in the 1967 film 'The Night Of The Generals' ; Harry Andrews appears as von Stulpnagel and Stauffenberg was played by an actor named Gerhard Buhr.....
