Thumbs up The Last Days Of Patton

Just bought a video of this very cheaply from e-bay. I believe it was originally made for TV, filmed in the UK on a tight budget and I've certainly never seen it before.

I'm obviously not going to cite it as a Great Movie, but's it's actually not as bad as I thought it might be. It has a 'proper' director (Delbert Mann) and, although it's a little weird for me to see Knebworth House in Hertfordshire posing as the SS-Junkerschule at Bad Tolz ( ) George C Scott gives, as always, a splendid acting performance ( although looking a little too old for the part, here ).

It's not a slam-bang action movie and isn't meant to be - IMPO it gives an interesting portrayal of the frustrations of a fighting General coping with post-war political and social problems. A sad movie, but one I'd actually recommend to anyone interested in Patton.

I have seen this a long time ago. It was all Patton as a whole and very dramatic with very little action. It was awkward to see him 'buddying' with a Waffen SS officer and even suggesting we use them to fend off the Russians. If memory serves me right. Also, what was the thing with the woman? Can't recall if she was a niece or not.

I am actually a fan of Patton. I dont think that he was the best an anyway, but he was a born soldier, leader and a capable commander. One of the best of what the US had to offer?

I think that overall it was his big mouth and the utter hate for the Russians, that did him in. As his constant mention of "kicking the Russians ass while we are here in Europe" certainly did not sit well with his superiors especially with steady rising tentions between the former allies.

With all of that said, I am going to also add that no military commander should ever go out the way he did..... A DAMN SHAME.

The woman in question was Patton's half-niece, Jean Gordon, with whom he is believed to have had some kind of affair in 1936 and again in 1945.

Patton certainly showed admiration and sympathy for ex-SS men in Bavaria and made some very unfortunate remarks at the time. This period is well, and sympathetically, described in Carlo D'Este's biography of Patton.

Thanks Martin. That's it about the woman. It just seemed kind of odd in the movie.

I remember seeing the movie and did not understand the part of where they decided he should die in Europe for political reasons and not be sent to the US to die. I am rather slow in politics so can someone explain that to me ??

I saw this movie when it first came out. It was a made for TV sequal to Patton. I thought the movie was very decently done and agree that George C. Scott gave a great performance. I don't remember the year it came out but had to be about the mid to upper 1980's. I don't know why they did not include this made for TV movie as an extra when releaseing Patton on DvD? That's just like me having to go and re-purchase The Dirty Dozen again--just so I could have it's first sequal as well.

Beatrice Ayer Patton (1886 - 1953) - Find A Grave Memorial

On September 30,1953 at Hamilton, Massachusetts, while horse riding she suffered a ruptured aortic aneurysm which took her life instantly causing her to fall from the animal. After a brief Episcopal service, she was cremated. Her wish to be buried with her husband was well known to her children. An Army nurse is the only woman buried at the American Cemetery and memorial. There is another woman's presence: The ashes of the general's widow, Beatrice Ayer Patton were strewn over his grave by their children several years after her death.
