Ken Burn's The War
Starting on PBS on September 23.
It's mostly interviews with vets and their first hand accounts. It looks very well done and I'm looking forward to watching it!

Re: Ken Burn's The War
If it is as good as his Civil War series shown on PBS about 10 years ago then it should be exellent to watch.

Re: Ken Burn's The War
The "Book" is in stores now, 50 bucks with 30% off (now). I've looked it over, basically redundant to many others, but 30% is not enough off. Half off and you got a deal. I remember Iwo books topped out during "Flags"/"Letters", and then the market dove, (both are in the boom-boom racks "DVDs" (7.99) these days. So shall this one be
I can wait.

Agreed Carl. Absolutely briliant last night and tonight as well! The footage with the interviews are blended perfectly together.
Some of the footage, I've never seen before and I just am thoroughly enjoying it so far. Looking forward to the rest of it.

Just finished watching it myself and just mentioned it on another thread!
A good watch indeed with excellent footage and stories.

Did you guys notice that the narrations are done in the style of Ernie Pyle?

Now that sounds familiar. I am not impressed with Ken Burns as a film maker. It is very PBS and reminds me of Clint Eastwood's recent films. The file footage is very good. I have seen much in my time. It is worth watching but if you are going to spend your hard earned pennies go with the BBC World At War series which is a much better quality made doc and that was in 1974.

The: "World-At-War" Series was excellent. Also, for a series even better than WaW, try watching Battleline. This series came out in the 50's and is easily equal or passing of: Victory-At-Sea." And one other older series that is a great Doc series to watch is: The Twentieth Century - which was hosted by Walter Kronkite.

Re: Ken Burn's The War
OK, I know that somewhere in this cyber labyrinth there's a THREAD on the proposed Invasion of Japan, and not just some 37 1/2 billion different posts on the topic. Anyway, there was a History channel program on last night about it and something was said that made me angry: The question of "mass mutiny" by U.S. soldiers being sent from the ETO to redeploy for the invasion of Japan. This sounds way off the wall to me. Anyone ever hear of such? I think the revisionists are just starting to run out of things to talk about!

Yeah, I heard that on History channel somewhere. Was the show about the decision to drop the bomb, perhaps?

You can pick up the Victory At Sea real cheap on DVD. Lots of rare footage.
I'm gonna have to get a copy of the World at War for sure. Although I like the Ken Burns doc, it seems to lack any unseen or uncommon footage. It also seems to accuse the U.S. of being racist. He seems to keep bringing it up.

Ah so I see you understand the PBS reference.
I watched more of it to give it a fair review, there is beacoup fluff. It is just a little too rainbow for me(very similar to Clint Eastwood focusing on the Native American discrimination and drinking rather than the heroic exploits of the Marines) It is pretty, meaning good music score, production values, editing, sound, file footage, good interviews but the writing and direction or overall message falls short of what it should be. Quite revisionist. I realize he is telling the story from his 4 towns perspective but that leaves much to be desired. Definately watch it but don't waste your cash to add it to your collection.

Re: Ken Burn's The War
I agree. It is not the best series I've seen. WaW has to be closest to the best which I own and watch consistently.
I think Ken Burns has done a great job on making the story personal to people who don't know about WWII. He has taken families and individual towns and focused on them making the American public knowledgable to the extent of understanding the basics of what happened from 1939-1945.
Of course for knowledgable guys like us (meaning C.Evans, Kai and all you other WWII gurus{my heroes})LOL, it just doesn't hold the gumption that other more in depth series have to those who actually research WWII.

Re: Ken Burn's The War
I Love the "Rainbow" reference, so much said in one word.
I'm glad it's on though, lets people (especially kids) know what went on before they got here, and how easily it could happen again.
They've yet to find out what sacrifice is (a good thing), but that has instilled a false sense of security in a world that can go straight into the dumper in a matter of weeks.
People back then had a full blown depression going on, and were just starting on a road to recovery. Hardship and doing for yourself were common if not totally necessary.
Today is too much "Fluff", gimmie-gimmie-gimmie, more-more-more.
Work for it,
build it,
grow it,
earn it.

Thanks fro the info Sarge, I already have it on DvD ;-)) I agree it's a good series, but still favor Battleline, as the best I have ever seen.
Also, another short series that is excellent is one that had only four 2 hr episodes. This series came out in the early 1990's and is called: Battlefields. Not too long after this one came out, they came out with a Battlefields II--which was almost as good as the first short series.
