A bridge to Far
A other good movie, realised in 1970' with big movie production, I love the ss division based in Holland and the us and british para division combat.
Gen Hacman the "polish general" Sean Connery the "scotish general" and again maximilien schell in ss general I think...
nice combat no ?

Re: A bridge to Far
I like it. IMO, though, they could have left that whole part about James Caan rescueing his buddy and putting a gun to the doctor's head. Then Caan was wrote off the movie......just seemed like a side-show to the actual event.

<=======Beware of this character
I liked Maximillian Schell's comment as he watched the paras fly over, "only to have such power"

That is odd. I resized down to 350 pixels prior to posting. Hmmph. Might want to recheck at the bottom and ensure all of the signature permissions are checked yes

Re: A bridge to Far
James Caan's character is fact, not fiction. In actual fact, Dohun took four casualties to the aid station. Cornelius Ryan interviewed him and asked him if he would have shot the doctor. Dohun replied, "I don't know to this day if I would have shot him". Dohun was turned in by the doctor but it was his CO, Lt Col Steve Chappuis 2/502nd PIR, who placed him under a minute's arrest.

Re: A bridge to Far
To add a tidbit to Steve W's posting about Dohun. After the war, Dohun managed a Hotel-not sure if he was the owner or not? Other than that, that's all I know about him.

Re: A bridge to Far
Good point about Dohun....I agree it seems a bit 'clunky' in the movie, but I think it is one of those unbelievable-but-true things.
The one character in 'A Bridge Too Far' that I really don't think 'works', and in fact I find quite embarrassing to watch, is Elliott Gould.....

To Martin Bull
The history Channel is just now giving "Raid on Amiens Prison". It is allmost only about the "Mosquitos".
Do you have that program? If not, I can make a copy for you. They will send this program again at about 18.00 tonight.
Best regards
Mats

Re: A bridge to Far
Elliott Gould's character is most likely based on Robert F Sink, whose 506 guys had the Son Bridge as an objective.

Re: A bridge to Far
They made a good, multipart movie about part of that outfit, didn't they?

They even named it after the outfit's CO - think about it!

Quite right, Steve - and thanks for the correction. I mainly meant that, to me, Gould is just a bit too 'hammy' in the role.....

Martin,
Yes, I agree. Perhaps not one of Gould's better roles.

Re: A bridge to Far
Agree with Martin about the "Hammy" Gould. I guess he really did chew an un-lit cigar, but they could've found someone better.(over-acted?)
The rest of the show I like, even the Caan part.
Especially the final excuse to blame "Monty" instead of himself.
I do like the part where Model thinks the target is him, and DiDi's in a "heart-beat".

Re: A bridge to Far
As a very small anecdote to that, some years ago I went to Arnhem with Holts - and the expert guide was Maj-Gen Tony Jones RE ( who removed the explosives from Nijmegen Bridge ).
He told me that whenever he watched the film, he was very irritated when Gould bellows at the British soldier 'Have you ever built a Bailey Bridge, son...?'
'I'd have shouted back Of course I have, you bloody fool ! What the hell d'you think we've been doing all the way from Normandy....? ' said the General.....

Re: A bridge to Far
'Major Harry Carlyle' - he's the British officer with the umbrella - is a composite character. The carrying of an umbrella is something which was done by Maj Digby Tatham-Warter, CO A Company 2nd Bn 1st Parachute Bde. His reason was his bad memory. He could never remember the password. Since a German officer would never carry an umbrella, Tatham-Warter knew he would pass safely through any checkpoint!
'Maj Fuller' was in reality Maj Brian Urquhart. In writing the screenplay, Cornelius Ryan, would seem to have considered the movie's audience and avoided having two characters with the same surname.
