Default Time Team Sunday 10/2 C4

I believe this programme is looking at or digging might be a better word for the anti-tank and other defences built or left on Shooters Hill in SE London in 1940 as a potential anti-invasion line......

Oh no ! Another one I shall have to watch, but I can feel myself getting irritated already.....

I wish I bring myself to like the style of the 'Time Team team' but for some reason, they really get on my *****.......

Martin,
Yes their style is not everyone's cup of tea but don't you feel the anti-invasion defences of 1940 are a somewhat neglected aspect of WW2?

Yes AM, they certainly are. Or maybe I'm just obsessed by them!
I can't find very much on Shooter's Hill on Sub-brit, so the dig could be a major find or a major disappointment.
I kind of agree with Martin; for some strange reason TT seem out of their depth the minute they enter the 20th century.

Don't get me wrong - they do a lot of really worthwhile stuff ( Normandy, B-17s in Suffolk, A-26 Invaders in the North-East ) but they always manage to make me want to throw things at the telly.....

I must agree, the Time Team squad are an irritating bunch but i did like their B-17 dig.

Martin, if you are compelled to throw things at the television during the programme, then may i suggest something soft...todays tvs cost a fortune to replace...

I've found that ping-pong balls are best...pieces of shrapnel and shell fragments can have unintended consequences.....

What really bugged me about that B-17 dig was the 'tonight for the first time we try to unravel the mystery of what happened to these aircraft...' rhetoric. When their own digging failed to produce conclusive answers, they suddenly appeared with a couple of propellers which had been dug up by local aviation archaeologists about 20 years ago.....and they'd known the full story of the 'mystery' for donkey's years.....

Still, it's all good TV, I suppose.....

The scene is now set in my mind...Martin sitting in front of the television armed with a bucket of ping pong balls, ready to launch at Tony Robinson's head the minute he appears on screen....

Shooters Hill was just a few miles from where I was born and not that far from central London so if the defences had bene used in anger it was have been a pretty desperate situation.....

Anyway totally off topic a few years ago bought a most useful pocket guide called British Anti-Invasion Defences 1940 to 1945 by Ausitn Ruddy so will have this ready for Sunday!

Well, OK - it was slightly ( only slightly, mind ) less irritating than usual.

Some of what they did was a waste of time and effort ( the barrage-balloon site seemed rather pointless, for instance... ) but the spigot-mortar site was interesting and of course, the possible communications-bumker-in-the-backyard was quite fascinating ; I'd have liked to have known more about that.....

...I wonder if Pillboxes UK was watching ?

Martin,
Agree I was mystified as to the large building in that person's back garden.....I personally doubt anything to do with the Auxiliary Units as somewhat easy to find, but perhaps a communications centre of some sort??????

Would have liked to have seen a bit of effort into that foulgas 'garage'......

The anti-invasion defences are an interesting subject if only because in a lot of cases no records!

Yes - it was a typical 'TT' irritation - let's investiage that earth bank to see if there's evidence of a 'fougasse - and that's the last you hear of it !

Quite honestly, the 'garden bunker' would almost have been worth a programme to itself but as usual, the 'three-day' format precluded serious research.....

I missed the programme, i forgot to set my HDD recorder...

However, it appears that from previous posts i didn't miss much, as per most Time Team programmes...

Think i'll head over to the BBC website and watch the re-run of the programme.
