'Train' star Paul Scofield dies.
One of Britain's greatest Shakespearian actors, Paul Scofield, has passed away at the age of 86.
The obituaries in todays' National papers rightly focus on his legendary stage performances and his much rarer film appearances, such as 'A Man For All Seasons'.
However, none of the ones I've read even mention my personal favourite, so I thought I'd put that right with this thread. Scofield played the obsessive Colonel von Waldheim in John Frankenheimer's 1963 WWII classic, 'The Train'. I always enjoy watching Scofield's almost expressionless, flinty-eyed performance ( 'Where - is - my - TRAIN ? ' ) as his single-minded determination to evacuate the art treasures of France to the Reich is thwarted again and again by the French Resistance. Great movie, great performance.

'The Train' is the only perfomance of his that I have seen - but I agree, it was a standout characterization in one of the great war films (along with 'Dambusters', of course! )

I fell the same way about Paul Scofield and his acting abilities as you two Gents do. Also, like Martin, The Train is my favorite movie with him in it. He sure was good and it was great, to see him go up against another favorite of mine: Burt Lancaster.
Rest in Peace, Paul.

I love that movie. He was great in it.
