Default What is your favorite soundtrack from any war film?

Name your favorite soundtrack or song from any war film, be it WWII or anything else. My favorites would have to be the Saving Private Ryan soundtrack by John Williams or Leave No Man Behind from Black Hawk Down (by Hans Zimmer). Also try to list the composer of the music if you can, and if you don't know who wrote your song(s), post about it and we'll try to help you. Thanks,

The film "ZULU" with Micheal Cain.

Two soundtrack bits.... The advance by the Zulu wariors, to wards the walls of the makeshift fort at Rourkes Drift, and the final scenes with the massed choir of the Welsh Guards, singing " Men Of Harlech ", as the credits roll up.

Eleven Victoria Crosses, at one battle ? Yes, and very well deserved ones at that. One company, about 130 men, of the 24th Foot, facing down 6,000 Zulu warriors, who the day before had wiped out a British force that was 8 times larger. Surrounded and with out hope of relief, they held out and defeated the odds.

Interested to know more ? Do a Google on "The battle of Rourke's drift "

Ever after, the 24th were know as the " Die Hards ".

Long before Bruce Willis ever put on makeup.

Not to steal from Martin but, I too like the themes from Battle of Britain & WHere Eagles Dare.

I also include the theme for: The Alamo "Green Leaves of Summer",
Sands of Iwo Jima/Halls of Montezuma (being it's the same theme)
The theme from: "The Fighting 69th" which is "Garry Owen"
The theme from: "The Longest Day"
The theme from: "Patton."
The theme from: "Captain Horatio Hornblower."
Ah yessss...who can forget the theme from: "Das Boot." I like the version that is played by the Polish Philharmonic Orchestra much better.
Finally, the theme from Kelly's Heroes which is: "Burning Bridges" by the: Mike Curb Congregation.

Does the soundtrack of the movie Top Gun counts? I like to play it on a really long drive.
Another one I like is the Longest Day and the theme from the Green Berets. Now I can't get the words "Fighting soldiers from the sky" etc etc from my head!

Have to agree with CanadianCitizen, ZULU, when Hook eventually decides he is part of all this and gets off his bed grabs his rifle and the music cuts in, seems to be the music for victoria cross actions in that movie, same music when wounded vc earners start moving ammo supply.
Hook was in fact a short dumpy figure in real life with a big Vicrotian Moustache. Its interesting to see what happened to all the real characaters after they left the army. Have a particularly good illustrated book on the battle and the individual actions of those centred on in the movie together with a sort of where are they now section on how they died, buried etc in the years afterwards.

Urgh:

While the V.C. is not handed out with the rations, a much more rare bravery award ( there are only 10 in existence ) are the "Queen's Scarves " Hand knitted by Queen Victoria herself, and given during the Crimean War, 1856.

I have to add something I just thought of:

Its not a soundtrack, but a great musical scene is from Patton where the British bagpipes are mixed with US Brass bands as they marched through Messina.

Hi Martin, did you know that you can have both of these on the same CD along with others including: Das Boot, Kelly's Heroes, Midway, Patton, The Longest Dat etc. I think it's called: The War Collection. Has a bunch of others on it too and I think including the theme for Dambusters. If you want me to check my CD to see for sure-just let me know.

Did anyone post the theme for: The Great Escape? if not, then add that as another.

Also, who can forget: The Colonel Bogey March?

The: Ben Hur theme, is another good one.

Animal House.

ok I know, it's not a war movie, but think about it! It was Dean Wormer versus the Delta House guys! It's a stretch I know.

One of my favorites is "The Great Escape".

The Great Escape theme is excellent. Also, on that same CD I mentioned to Martin, the Great Escape theme is on it and I think actually sounds much better than the original. I saw an advertisement on AMC that they were going to have it on again soon. I wonder if it will be on this weekend?

Cross of Iron Theme.
Once 'Hanschen klein' gets into my head it's a little tune that I just can't shake for a week or two.
YouTube - Cross of Iron

Always liked the 'sound' of The Deerhunter too.

'War themes' are quite odd of late, the (In my opinion) rather overblown style of soundtrack used on Saving Private Ryan, and carried onto Band of Brothers, seems to have made it impossible to screen any war drama without a very similar chord-heavy noise roaring in the background.

Cheers,
Adam.

My dad's favorite soundtrack is Bridge on the River Kwai. In fact, he even taught his parrot to whistle the entire tune completely.
I would've liked the tune too if not for the fact that I don't know how to whistle!

someone mentioned Hans Zimmer so I have to get specific here...try 'hummel gets the rockets' from the rock soundtrack, also 'roll tide' from crimson tide...and the music from thin red line- 'journey to the line' my brother and I went to gettysburg battlefield in 2006 and I mixed a zimmer cd that we played as we drove there from the hotel and at the site itself. man, that music gave me goosebumps as I imagined what took place there in 1863. Zimmer is the best at capturing the essence of war in musical form. Yes, Williams is good but he's a bit more hollywoody in his interpretations. Wagners 'siegfrieds funeral music' works well as war music as does Orff's 'o fortuna' from the carmina burana. I love this category...what a great question this was

ah yes, cross of iron...I was 11 years old when this came out and my father just refused to take me to see it...it would be 7 years later when I finally got to see this on video tape. its still a good film IMHO and that german kids song does get stuck in your head for days...
