Two more very good War movies released on DvD.
I mentioned these in other threads but, in case they were not seen, here they are.
WalMart currently has a tribute going on about Frank Sinatra, so they have about a dozen of his movies in their own section, for sale. Among the titles released, they include a very good war movie and a very good Western.
The War Movie is: "None But the Brave" which is a movie that has Frank Sinatra as a Doctor, who is also a Drunk, and he is on an aircraft that is bringing in replacements for some US Marine unit on some Island. Their transport is piloted by: Clint Walker and as they are making their way to their destination, they get attacked by Japanese Zekes and they crash land unknowingly, on an island with a small and forgotten, Japanese Garrison on it. Brad Dexter is among some of the other "recognizable faces" in this movie. He was much better known for his role as the American Sergeant in: Von Ryans Express - another Sinatra vehicle.
The other movie, not only stars Sinatra, but Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and I forget who else. This movie is called: "Sergeants Three" and is a Western movie that is a re-make for Gunga Din-which starred: Victor McLaglen, Sam Jafe, Cary Grant and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. The Sgts 3 Sinatra character is the one that McLaglen played, the Gratn character, is played by Dean Martin, the Fairbanks character, is played by on of the Rat Pack-possibly Joey Bishop or that other guy whose name currently escapes me at this time. And finally, Sam Jaffes character (Gunga Din) is played by Sammy Davis Jr.

Re: Two more very good War movies released on DvD.
Hey Carl, you're familiar with old war flicks. It just popped into my head for some reason but I can't remember the name.
Rock Hudson is a commando(?)whos mission it is to blow up a German dam. Don't remember
what happened to his team but some local school kids end up helping him finish his mission.
Any clue about the movie's name?

It's Hornet's Nest. According to IMDB, the movie is about commando unit that was dropped behind the German lines in Italy and its mission was to blow up a strategic dam. However, the unit was ambushed and only its leader survived. He was picked up by a ragtag group of local youths, who struck a bargain with him--they will help him blow the dam if he will help them get revenge on the Germans, who have taken over their village and killed their parents.
Ice Station Zebra is my favorite Rock Hudson movie. It's not a World War II film. It's a Cold War film about a US nuclear sub. If you like Rock Hudson, I suggest you see this one, too.

I think you'll find that it was Peter Lawford. My Dad took me to see 'Sergeants Three' when I was about 10 and I remember it as a great knock-about Western.....

Hi FramerT, im not familiar with Rock Hudson blowing up a dam but, this sounds awfully close to him in a unit that attacked a German Oil and Feul dump along with some Coastal Guns. That film also had Nigel Green and I think George Peppard (as a Jewish soldire posing as an Afrika Korps officer. This movie is called: Tobruk, and I have a few original Studio Release photo's from this movie. It's been ages since I last saw this one. One line I remember well is because I found it interesting that the character that George Peppard was playing-said something like: "Watch out, Headhunters" meaning that some German Feldjagers were riding in motorcycles w/ sidecars and they pulled in just behind their Commando column.
Im not familiar with the movie titled: Hornets Nest. I wonder if that is just a different name for Tobruk? I may be wrong on both thtiels and will check if I can remember to do so.
Also, my favorite Rock Hudson movie is of course: The Undefeated (which he played a Confederate Colonel and which is also a John Wayne movie) ;-D He's also great as the Indian Chief in: Winchester '73.
Just checked and im correct about the title Tobruk. One way to tell if im right or not is if you can tell me if the movie your talking about was supposed to be in the deserts of North Africa? If so, im right about the title. If not, I haven't a clue ;-))

Hi Martin, thanks for his name. I don't know why I never can remember his name? I like him in everything i've seen him (Lawford) in. The Longest Day is one that easily comes to mind. ;-D
