Re: stereotypical War Films
I can only speak of what i've been told by a few German vets. Also, all of them were either in the Kriegsmarine or the Luftwaffe-both services of which-were not known for being full of mindless zealots.
Anyway, the U 181 guys are a prime example of those who were not pro-nazi. I met a Gebirgsjager RKT when I was in Germany and he too, was pretty much with the same opinions about it as the U 181 Gents were. They went and did their jobs serving for their Country, family and comrades. I don't think it was much more than that for the vast majority of them. I had only met one man in person-who had then and still did have-the same nazi beliefs from long ago. However, this man never committed any atrocites of anykind-with the exception of maybe having - 1-2 bottles of Vodka confiscated from him by his Sergeant-who then broke them on the ground spilling all of their contents.
I think seeing Stalingrad: Dogs Do You Want To Live Forever, A Time To Love and a Time To Die, Cross of Iron, The Enemy Below, The Battle of Britain, a Bridge Too Far, The Bridge At Remagen and Decision Before Dawn-all IMO, are pretty accurate in their portrayals of German Soldiers in WWII. I know for fact, that a few of the U 181 vets who I asked a certain question to, all told me that they agreed with the portrayals of German Sailors-the way they were portrayed in The Enemy Below. I do not know if all of them agreed to that but I do know the ones I talked with sure did.
Your question of how could Hitler come to power, I think can be answered soemthing like that not only being a sign of the times but, that many people were probably swept up with all the things going on around them and maybe were also over-whealmed with it all. I guess this can be akin to going to a party and doing wild things you would never do but did so only because you were at a wild party. For instance, Marti Gras. Marti Gras is known for many people doing things they normally would not do but, apparently seems to be an unofficial tradition of sorts. Take the pretty woman on someones shoulders who flashes her boobs to the croud. I doubt that the gal would normally do that just for the heck of it anywhere else-except at Mardi Gras.
