Default Talvisota

Talvisota means "Winter War", and is obviously about the war between Finland and Soviet Russia 1939-1940. The movie is about a group of Finnish soldiers, holding the Russians at bay from a trench.

A link to the IMDB article: Talvisota (1989)

It is a very good war movie, and I would recommend anyone to see it. However, as it is a Finnish movie, make sure to download a version that has English subtext.

There are three versions of Talvisota.

Original: 195 min

U.S. version: 125 min (Awful picture quality, several important scenes missing)

TV version: 250 min (Aired only on Finnish TV)

You can find the original version on DVD at eBay UK.

Or here: http://www.suomikauppa.fi/product_in...roducts_id=609

The 4 hour miniseries is definitely the best version. Unfortunately there is no sign of a DVD release. It will be aired on Finnish TV in spring 2009.

That's also a very good movie (Tali-Ihantala 1944). I recall watching it years ago. I will have to get it again.

I also have the Fire and Ice documentary, but I have not gotten around to watch it yet. I still have a whole load of other movies & documentaries in the "to watch" list prior to that one.

Um, Tali-Ihantala 1944 premiered in Finnish theaters last December and the DVD was released last month. You probably mean some other movie?

OK. If it is that new it was definately an older Finnish movie I watched. I think it was at least three years ago.

For those who have only seen the butchered 2 hour version:

Does it feel like there's a lot of stuff missing?
