Re: \The Best 50 WWII Movies Ever?
OK, first of all, I'm not much of a movie guy, so my opinions are probably not really worth much. I haven't seen most of these films, but really, who cares what Tarantino thinks? I guess anyone can make such a list, and it really comes down to opinion. In any case, Casablanca has to be near the top. I know it's not an action film, but without WW2 and the Nazis as a setting, there is no film.
As for the rest, I have no clue.

Re: \The Best 50 WWII Movies Ever?
The list has some good to great choices and I like the fact that not all of them are American and British. However, many don't belong there fr amny reasons. Ill start with:
1-10:
#7, Cross of Iron. I feel this one deserves to be on the list as it can't be denied that its a great film. #5, Went the Day Well, though good-doesn't belong in the top 50. #4, The Big Red One, great choice but I don't think for the slot its in. #3 Das Boote-great movie but not in such a high spot. The rest in 1-10 don't deserve to be there. There are many many oher movies that blow these away. Also, a Cartoon cannot really be considered a war movie-now can it?
11-20:
#20 Saving Private Ryan-does not deserve to be in the top 50. #19 The Bridge On the River Kwai-deserves to be on this list. #17 Attack, now THATs gotta be one of the most bizzare choices I saw on the list. #12, The Dirty Dozen, I can definately agree with. #11, Hell In the Pacific, though good-certainly not in the top 50.
21-30:
#30, Ice Cold In Alex, I can agree with. That is one hell of a great movie. #29, The Great Escape, again in agreement. However, I think it should easily be in the top ten. #26, Soldier of Orange sucked and doesn't even deserve to be in the top 1,000 list. #24, Kellys Heroes, does deserve to be on the list. #23, Schindlers List-certainly does NOT deserve to be on this list and perhaps can be ties with Soldier of Orange at 1,000 or above. #22, The Battle of Britain, certainly does deserve to be in the top 50 an at a lower number.
31-40:
#40, Inglorious Bastards certainly does NOT deserve to be anywhere under 1 MILLION and can be a third place tie with Schindlers List and Soldier of Orange. #'s 39 & 38 respectively "The Pianist and A Walk In the Sun, both do NOT deserve to be on this list-and both can be tied at Nr: 1,001!!! #36, Where Eagles Dare, does belong on this list and at a lower number. #34 A & B, both of Clint Eastwoods Iwo Jima movies. I think these belong in the top 100, but not top 50. #31, Downfall, deserves to be on a list of top war movies, but not in the top 50.
41-50:
#50, Escape To Victory. Has those who picked this list out finally "gone-around-the-bend"??? They can't be serious? right???? What a bird-brained choice. #48, Stalingrad. This one certainly does belong in the top 50. #46, Triumph Of the Will, cannot be on this list. It's NOT a movie but is something called: A Documentary. It deserves to be in the top 100 of a WWII Documentaries list-but not here. #45, Empire of the Sun-does not deserve to be on this list-possibly nearer to the 1,000 mark but certainly under Inglorious Bastards, Castle Keep etc--I mentioned Castle Keep because aside from a fine cast-the movie was bizzare and sucked. Same can be said for Slaughterhouse Five. Im almost surprised that they also didn't list the horrible grade "Z" movie: Battle for the Last Panzer!!! Back on topic now with #44, The Dam Busters. I barely remember that movie as I have only seen it once and long ago. It certainly deserves to be ona a Best Of list, and probbably lower on this one. #42, Hannibal Brooks, This was a great movie and was shot on location in Germany and Austria. It is one that may have to have an "Acquired Taste" for but it really is a grat movie. I hated the negative comments that the author of this site made against Oliver Reed. Oliver Reed was a damned fine Actor.
Some movies that deserve to be in the top 50 but were not, include: The Longest Day, The Enemy Below, The Train, Sands of Iwo Jima, Airforce, Sink the Bismarck, The Devils Brigade, The Desert Rats, Kapo (for an internationally made film) The Edge of Darkness, Battleground, DECISION BEFORE DAWN, A Time To Love and A Time To Die, All Quiet On the Western Front, and just too many other greats to try to attempt to list.

Well said Lou. This list is merely ones opinion over another. I've seen the vast majority of the movies listed, and some countless times. I didn't have time to quote on all of the ones I have seen so I left it to some of those that I did see, for lack of time.

Re: \The Best 50 WWII Movies Ever?
Carl, your commentary is very informative. At least you have seen many of the films you rate. I wonder how many the reviewer actually saw? I also like most of your choices at the end of the post, as long as you include Casablanca (which just might be my all time favorite film).

Re: \The Best 50 WWII Movies Ever?
Hi Lou, thank you Sir ;-)) and, I had forgotten to list that Bogart classic. I liked everything about that great classic. I take it that your also a huge Bogart fan like I am? ;-)) I know it's off topic some but-a few months back I picked up a couple of great Bogart boxed movie sets. One of them included two or three makes of: The Maltese Falcon. Of course-Bogarts version was the best of them ;-)) The other(s) were actually hard to sit through.
I'll have to look next time I go into one of my walk-in closets and see if I have both Bogart boxed sets or not? You can get these for around $30 or so at Deep Discount DvD. Also, a bunch of earlier Bogart, Cagney and Edward G. Robinson Ganster classics are out. Originally I had thought they were only going to do three "Warner Ganster Classics" boxed sets-but last I looked, they had four boxed sets out. The first one I want to get is box set Nr 3-because it has a never released in any format before-movie with Bogart in it called: The Black Legion. I only got to see part of this classic-once about 25 years ago. There is another one that is rarely shown anywhere and never released in any format-but I forget the title of that movie? I THINK it could be: All Through the Night??? It's a great story and has Bogart teamed up with someone and they are Truck Drivers who get cought up in some sort of racket of somekind. I also think I saw Alan Hale Sr in it as the owner and boss of a big Trucking Company. If I have time to check IMDB to confirm it-ill do so.
Sorry about going off on another tangent but, thank you for the kind words. Indeed I have seen all that I crowed about-plus most of the rest on that list-even including that Japanese Cartoon-which I saw on some Cable TV station last year-and in which I thought was a very wierd Cartoon-something sort of relating to the Atomic Bombs dropped on Japan-then it went greatly down hill from there. The animation was excellent as always is the case with Japanese animation. Great case in point is: Akira. Though not normally the type of thing I would ever wish to see-but the animation used to make that cartoon movie, IMO-can never be matched.
