Charles Cooper was nick-named Tail End Charlie by his crew and that name rapidly became adopted for all rear-gunners in the RAF. Sadly, Charles was blinded by a German bomb which fell outside his billet in 1941.

Moreover, petroleum reserves declined from 2,400,000 tons at the beginning of war to 1,600,000 tons in May 1940 while gasoline supplies fell from 300,000 tons in Sept 1939 to 110,000 tons by April 1940.

With such problems the long-term outlook appeared exceedingly dangerous.

Hitler´s last bloodless conquest on March 22 1939.

During the night of 21-22 March, the Lithuanian government decided to return the Memel District to the Reich. 24 hours later, on the morning of 23 March, Adolf Hitler sailed into the harbor at Memel at the head of a strong German naval force and spoke to the loyal people of the most remote German territory.

To commemorate the occupation the "Memel Medal" was authorized on May 1, 1939.

The award was presented to all military, political and civil Personnel who had distinguished themselves in actions related to the returning of the district to Germany.

Awards stopped at the end of 1940, with a total of 31,322 having been presented.

YORCK VON WARTENBURG, PETER GRAF (1903 - 44)



One of the founders of the Kreisau Circle and a cousin of Claus Schenk von Stauffenberg.

One the first conspirators to be arrested after the abortive plot of 20 July 1944, Yorck von Wartenburg's conduct in the People's Court was both dignified and brave, in the face of Roland Freisler's insults and provocations. Asked why he had never joined the NSDAP, he answered simply: 'Because I am not and never could be a Nazi' . His Resistance activity, like that of the other members of the Kreisau Circle, was based on Christian conviction, the rejection as he explained to Freisler of 'the totalitarian claim of the State on the individual which forces him to renounce his moral and religious obligations to God' . He was hanged on 8 August 1944.

WWII started right with a war crime.

1 September 1939, 4:50 - 5:30 a.m., Wielun city. On this morning, despite the complete lack of military installations in the city, and with the nearest Polish troops of the 28th Infantry Division situated southwest of Wielun, German bombers of I./KG76 (4. Luftflotte), commanded by Oblt. Walter Sigel, brutally bombed the center of the city. And, after releasing their bombs, Luftwaffe pilots shot at panicked, escaping civilians. Three waves of bombers, totalling 120 aircraft took part in the attack, dropping more than 70 tons of bombs. The effect of the raid was the killing of more than 1200 civilians, the injuring of thousands more (the city's population was about 16,000 people), and the destruction of about 70% of the city's buildings.
