Remember 1st. Day 1943

I went from Detroit to Chicago and then as usual Army procedure at Mid-night arrived at Miami,Florida. The first words I heared from Sergeant was “ Get in any of these trucks”

We were taken on a cause-way to Miami Beach and stopped in front of the “Netherland Hotel”. Across the street was a sandy beach and the Atlantic Ocean. I thought “ not bad”

Tomorrow I will take a little swim. The 2nd . word I heared from the sergeant was “Pick up your bed sheet and get to your rooms and go to sleep”. The next morning rolls around and this sergeant is walking up and down the hall way’s blowing a whistle and banging some metal cans togethere and hollering to fall out and get in line.. We walked to a green colored hotel, whitch they called the green latrine and lined up for breakfast. . A couple of kids were walking along the line selling orange juice, pineapple juice and grapefruit juice. The rest of the day was lectures and shots.
