I have a question about convoy’s.

1945 we left San Francisco June 1,1945 and arrived at Philippine Island on July 9,1945.One week we sat at Pearl Harbor. We were harassed by Japanese submarines. We had to wear life jackets and canteen of water at all times.. Now comes my senor moment, I remember when sub was detected our convoy would scatter while our Navy dropped depth charges. . Is this correct or would the convoy stay to-gether? Our ship was the S.S. Sacajawea with about 900 men. The convoy would stay togeather. Scattering on the first sign of enemy activty would defeat the purpose of convoying to begin with. Now, from the perspective of someone aboard ship it may seem this happened. It is possible that the convoy spread out to make torpedo hits less likely and therefore it might seem to have "scattered." But, after many years experiance at sea, any ship not within a few miles of the one I am on isn't often visible and, even when it is it is often just a speck on the horizon.
Mostly what you see at sea is the sea.
