Near Vire in 1944. we abutted an American unit. They came over and welcomed us with the exclamation; "Glad to have you with us" (How about that for memory?) they brought over a khaki towel full of goodies that we had never seen, cigars, grub, the lot!
Can anyone recall that meeting? Then even more important to me, where are you American soldier that gave me his Bowie knife as a keepsake? when I was walking back to my unit covered in blood and gore.
I would love to hear from any one that can recall the moments shared by soldiers. I lost the "Bowie Knife" keepsake when I was wounded again in the early hours at Overloon and Venraij. But I have never forgotten the kindness shown in the heat of battle all those long years ago.
