As I am a newbie, I will now ask some impossibly "dumb" questions. I am interested in battlefield excavation of WWII battle sites. Are there ongoing digs? If So, who do you contact? I am thinking of becoming an archaeologist as a second profession and would like to speak with someone who might steer me toward this end. Long shots are my specialty. Thanks and good to be here! Hi Landser,
Welcome to the forums!
This is a particular interest of mine, although I'm not professionally involved. You'll find a thread called Military Archaeology elsewhere in the forum which might give you a few tips.
If you go to www.gla.ac.uk/ this takes you to the website of Glasgow University. Two Archaeology professors from there do a series called Two Men in a Trench for the BBC, which is all about battlefield archaeology.
The site will also give you an insight into the general qualifications needed to be an archaeologist.
AFAIK, you would probably need a good honours degree in Archaeological practice, and then specialise from there. Don't quote me though!
Several other members of the forum are involved in aviation archaeology-Martin Bull, Stevin Ooudinshorn and Erich, and they'll probably have more useful info to give you.

Regards,

Gordon

Hi Landser,
I'm pretty new to this forum as well but on your question about archaeolgy i think that you had better get your qualifications first. Battlefield archaeolgy is a specialist subject because of the live ammunition etc. Going it yourself is very hard to do as getting permission from landowners is near on impossible. There are some on-going digs but i think that you will find it very hard if not impossible to get on the team. Most digs give all their finds to the relevant museums and if your caught trying to take something off site you'll never work another dig, thats for sure. If you try putting something like battlefield archaeolgy into 'google' you might come up with something.

Regards
Mike
