this past weekend i was at an Antique and Gun show, and I came into the possession of a ring, this isn't just any ordinary ring though, it was taken off of a dead German officer in (i believe but i will update this ASAP) Dusseldorf, Germany towards the end of the war. I am sure that it isn't anything awarded to him by the army, i think it's just a wedding band, but from information given to me, i believe that he may have been from a German Armored unit because the man that took it off of him was with an American armored unit throughout the war. now why i need your help is, because i would like to atleast TRY and reunite the ring with any of his living family, i realize that this sounds like an IMPOSSIBLE task, and that it may be, i feel that if the right research is done to find out what units were there, possible armored units, casualties, and actually locate a record of the casualties, and ranks of the casualties, i feel that it may be a possilbilty to narrow it down. one thing is that he may have been a higher rank, or atleast had something on him that easily identified him as an officer (i dont know much about the German uniforms) so if i could somehow find out the ranks of the casualties, that would also help out greatly. well im sure many of you will laugh at me but if ANYONE has ANY information that would lead to me being able to contact living family, or atleast find out who it was, or even what unit the man might have been in please post it here!!. well thanks a lot guys. hope to get some posts soon !!!

I hope you succeed 5-0-duce! It will be VERY hard though, if not impossible. Who will recognize the ring after all these years? Does the ring have any identifying features at all, like date, inscriptions? Not that that is of any use here. I think we can only try here to establish the German OOB at Dusseldorf at the end of the war, so we might have a possible unit.

I know the 101st AB Div was south of Dusseldorf in April 1945. Do you know to which Armored unit the guy belonged that took the ring in the first place or when that was? With a unit and a place (Dusseldorf) we can perhaps establish which German units opposed him at that time...That would be a start...
